When will USB be ready for primetime?

USB has been available for ages, but in my experience, I have never come across such an unstable and buggy interface.

I've got a number of USB devices because the older interconnects such as parallel and SCSI are slowly being phased out by peripheral manufacturers.

What I can't understand is why, despite this, these peripherals have constant problems.

My family and I have 5 PCs between us - and a whole slew of USB devices, including printers, digital cameras, mice, a digital radio and a zip drive. With the only exception of one digital camera, every single peripheral has problems with at least one PC - either the device just isn't detected, or the PC crashes during driver installation, or communication is lost after a few minutes. One PC (based on an Abit KT7) will not work with any USB device (the motherboard has been RMAd 2x - both replacements do the same) - I've tried printers, mice, cameras, a zip and a scanner - none work at all.

Similarly, I though USB was supposed to have intelligent power management - I've tried several hubs, and, without fail, plugging in more devices than the hub has power for will result in an immediate BSOD. It doesn't matter whether USB error detection is enabled or not - the same happens.

I just wasted half a day yesterday trying to get a lexmark printer working after upgrading my Mum's PC - I changed the old i810 mobo for an Asus A7n266 - The printer would go crazy (flashing lights, and thrashing heads) when plugged into the nforce board. Needless to say, it was not detected by windows. When connected to the i810 board - it was perfect. Clean install of Windows (ME or 2k), Driver updates, BIOS flashes, and printer firmware updates failed to fix the problem. In the end the only solution was to replace the printer.

The intel boards have by far the fewest problems, my only via board completely fails to work at all, and a nvidia board has some incompatibilites. It looks like a lot of people need to put a lot of work into USB to make it a useful interconnect.

Hmmm I've hardly had any issues with USB and I have had devices ever since they came available...Right now on a VIA 333 chipset I have 2Digital cameras, 2 Scanners (1USB2.0), 3 Printers, MS Speakers, 3 (USB2.0) External Cases, 2 Mice, Keyboard, ForceFeedback Joystick, FM Radio, UPS, and AIW Remote...all work when I use them.

Since I started USB, it's worked almost flawlessly - install the drivers and device according to the instructions, and it works. Simple as that.
Were the hubs powered by an external adapter?

Your RMAing experience, with two boards sharing the same problem - I already got 2 Abit KT7's in a row, from 2 different vendors, that had defective IDE controllers. After loosing over 700MB of data to corruption - files were either damaged to the point of being jibberish, to being wiped to zero byes - I got a replacement for the first board, and it finally worked.

2.0 scanner ..which make/model and is it faster..? :)

I`ve never had any USB problems with my USB stuff,it could be many things that can cause USB problems like drivers etc, even hardware like PSU can cause problems ,and we all know not all motherboards are created equal, just like some video cards have problems in certain boards, who do you blame? board, video card or drivers.

In general PCs will always have some problems,USB is just a small part of it,remember hardware and software is not the perfect match.

I got mines quite awhile ago and it's the Canon CanoScan 1250 U2F ...has a warm-up time but faster when using larger DPI's (not close to SCSI)...I'm sure newer 1's have been released and prolly better.

thanks :) was curious as to what need there was for a USB 2.0 scanner..larger dpi and the handling thereof..ok

The Epson Perfection 1660 is a USB 2 scanner. It is the model I will probably be getting when I eventually upgrade from the crappy (USB 1) HP Scanjet 3300C that I have now.

Personally, I think USB is and has been ready for "prime time" for quite a while now. But as with everything there are bound to be some problems. (though honestly I've never had any, at least not with USB). It is hard to say what your problems might be. You have 5 PCs so hardware software and OSes all conspire to make each problem different from the others, so it is also hard to give recommendations.

In general though, as was said your PCs hardware (PSU etc) may be a problem. Drivers and software conflicts may be a problem. Too many USB devices using the PCs power, as opposed to plugging them in could also pose a problem. For example, if you have a few high powered devices being powered by the USB bus instead of directly powered from a power pack, your hub and/or computer may crash because too much power is being pumped to too many things, making the PC unstable. In my experience, after memory errors I think power issues are one of the single biggest causes of Windows BSODs.

Hope this helped a little at least.

I don't know what you're talking about. I can't remember having any trouble with any of my USB devices on any of my motherboards, and I've used quite a few devices & mobo's.
