When will BIOS be phased out?

I don't want to upgrade to my next computer until UEFI is out.

I want my next system to purely futuristic, forward looking. SSD, UEFI, USB 3.0, 8+ Cores, etc.

Anyone know?

Probably when a lot of 2 TB+ disks are shipping. Probably sometime in 2011. My understanding is that right now most (all?) of current Intel (brand name) motherboards support UEFI. The selection is much more limited with non-Intel-brand motherboards.

Yeah, UEFI hasn't really percolated down to the consumer space yet. It's pretty much ubiquitous in servers now. Dell still calls it a "BIOS" but it is really UEFI (you can get the shell and everything).

Gateway system boards have used EFI bioses for a while now.
And some MSI boards have it. Apple uses their own flavor of EFI bioses.
