I realize that the current plasma screens can be hooked up to a computer. I'm more interested in when there will be actual computer monitors based on plasma technology.

probably never, some new technology will come along. Plasmas are VERY succeptable to burn in. THey could never handle the still images on a Windows desktop.

Ditto the above !!! HOPEFULLY never because plasma's are no good for still images, They will burn.

There exist 32 and 40" LCD screens already, and getting bigger. I don't see Plasma overcoming LCD in the long run. Better yields, less reliability problems, and commoditize-ability are all on LCD's side.

Plasma will never be the standard for PCs or home use, IMO. Too many other techs in the works that will prove superior before the price on plasma screens will come down enough to go mainstream.

Have any of you seen this tech Sony has been working on: SXRD

That's a full 1920x1080 resolution on a screen measuring 0.78 inches diagonally with a contrast ration over 3000:1.

Hopefully never. LCD far surpasses plasma technology. And with LCD growing larger and OLED starting to come out, plasma is going to go the way of monochrome monitors.

Wow...the 60" plasma that I saw at the Sony store blew me away...and you guys are saying LCD is better. It'll be nice once all of this new technology filters down to the mainstream.

Whats the need for a plasma screen for the computer? You could use a projection system for a larger display and depending on which one you can even get 1280x1024 resolution, but right now those are still limited and highly priced.

In your opinion? It's a fact. Plasmas are really bad about burn-in and don't have the quality of LCDs. I can guarantee you that they'll never enter the PC market. That's right, they'll never even enter it. Why? Because the people in the factories know that they're not good for computer displays. Period.

That other Sony technology is interesting, though.

That article says Sony will release products to the US market this year - so we should know soon enough how it shapes up. A 5ms response time sounds intriguing, but the screen will have to get a tad larger...
