Hi,
My friend is looking for a recommendation on a laptop from me and with Haswell just being released I feel it's best to wait for an i3 Haswell laptop.

Does anyone know when the i3 haswell mobile chips will be available to buy?

At back to school time, I would expect to see a few haswell i5 notebooks for $500. That is probably going to be the best deal on anything haswell. But its just not worth it imo. The price premium isnt buying you much in the way of tangible features. Some extra battery life? Slightly better graphics? That's not worth $100-$300 premium. Just buy an ivy i5, it is still going to be faster than haswell i3's for less money.

I would say it depends on how the prices shake out. Haswell's improved igp means nothing to me on the desktop, but it could be a worthwhile feature on the mobile side.

OTOH, if you are not trying to do any kind of gaming or other graphically demanding apps, Ivy will probably be a better buy until Haswell has been on the market for a while. I have a SB i5 for my work laptop, and it definitely is adequate, but I would hesitate to get an i3 without turbo.

I would agree with the others- it depends on what your friend is going to do with the laptop. If he is not doing anything graphically demanding he could be better off getting an Ivy Bridge i5.

He wants to spend as little as possible so i5 is out of his price range. i3 is all I can get him to stretch to, he would of probably bought a celeron left to his own devices.

I think he is mainly going to be using general web surfing and word processing. I don't think he will ever do any gaming on it.

is there a good AMD alternative? I only ever use desktops and I've been blindly following Intel because they have had such a big lead. I have no idea how they are doing with laptop performance.
