Arrgh! I'm checking out ESPN and on the main page I see that Michael Strahan had broke off contract talks with the Giants:disgust:. He wants 20-25 Million dollars as a signing bonus. 20 million dollars!!!!!!!! The team "only" offered 16 mill WTF?!! :|. He played like crap for a year then played great in the last year now he wants 20-25 million to sign. He already get 8 mill per now. What the hell is wrong with this guy? He has to know if he gets all the money the team can't do anything in the free-agent market but he talks about wanting a Super Bowl ring. Bah!!!!!!! How long is it till college football? Wait they want to be paid too.... Damn I guess I'll hafta wait for high school to start back up

No, they'll be greedy but for less money

Greed rules the world my friend...get used to it

never, and this occurs in the movie industry as well. as in most industries actually. they're no reason kobe should get that much money. he's great and all, but not worth nearly as much.

But if the Lakers paid him less, he could go to another team....As someone raised in Socal, I'd even be willing to pay a tax to make sure he stays...

Yeah I know. I'm all for making as much money as you can in life but after somepoint you have to look ahead if he (and the rest of the team) had won the Super Bowl 2 years ago instead of getting blown out he would get the money no questions asked but to come off a season where they didn't even make the playoff's and ask for 20 mill......sheesh

It's different in football because they are the only one of the 4 major to not have guaranteed contracts. They ask for the huge signing bonus up front but their base salaries are very low.
With the way the salary cap works today most football players never even finish the contracts they sign before they are released because their contracts are so heavily back loaded after the initial big payoff of the signing bonus

yeah.. he's holding out for $20-25 mil signing bonus. he should give a good 50% of it to favre for gift wrapping the "record breaker".

Heck, I'm surprised football players get so little compared to other sports. They take a huge beating w/ constant risk of serious injury and possible paralysis or even death. They have short careers to along with short lives. Their going to need that money for all them hosptial bills. =P

Now baseball... now talk about too much money...

If you felt you could get a raise at your job would you try to get it or would you feel greedy?

as for how much someone makes.. thats up to the market as others have said. People with skills that are in high demand and very short supply tend to make alot of money.
its not just true in sports

But in baseball they play 162 regular season games so a guy making 10 million a year isn't making as much per game as a basketball playing making 7 million a year for 82 games

greed will be outta pro sports when pro sports are aliminated. you gotta payem if thats all you want them to do. and the more popular they become, and the more money they bring to the owners, is it not logical they will want a portion of the money, they themselves are creating.

if you look at the statistics, compared with regular industry, pro athalets aren't payed enough. a company pays their employs say 70% of their profits. pro only 40%. its a monopoly

on another point, how come no one cares when an actor gets 20 million for one movie, they do far less than an athelete.

Unless you're forced to buy starter jackets or attend a professional athletic event at least once a year, its not your money so what's it to you? And if you do any of these things, then you may at any time chose to vote with your dollar (or $100 dollars being more like it).

The "greed" as you have called it will continue as long they can get away with it...don't tell me if you COULD get $100 million for a week of work that you wouldn't do it.

It's not about the game, it's about the money. Those who watch a game pay for a product from a business.

Capitalism once again.

Bunch of old men playing a kids game..you bet their over payed...but who stands in line to by the over priced tickets???

<< It's not about the game, it's about the money >>

It is not a game it is business and each player is a independent contractor, when the supply of good players excede the demand the price per player will go down.
Bleep

As a fan of sports and a fan of the Giants it is a lot to me. If we give this one guy (or anyone) 10,16,20 mill and don't put out a competive team I'm going to be pissed. I don't goto the games cause the tickets are too high and I don't buy alot of team stuff just a hat every now and then but I do follow my team and I know this guy if he gets his money and we don't improve the team will be on Sportscenter yapping about we need this and we need that. If I had the skill to play any game for a living and someone wanted to give me 100 mill to do it I would but I mean come on this guy is in the last year of a 32 million dollar contract and he is gettin 8 million for this next season coming up they are offering him 16 mill to sign an extention thats 24 million for this year alone 3/4 of his total contract for the last four seasons. That is just being greedy.

The way I see it professional athletes are performers - the are providing entertainment for the public. The public pays a price for that entertainment, generating revenue for the team. I see no reason why the players should not get a healthy portion of that, they are the reason the fans are there.

What some people call "greedy" another calls "getting what you can while you can." I mean I've known people making $15,000/year as a convenience store clerk who think that doctors are "greedy" because they may make $200K per year.

Greedy is popularly defined as "any time someone makes a whole lot more than I do."
