So, why would anyone buy a laptop for gamming?

I was thinking the same. I can't imagine the high-end notebook products being more than 0.5% of NVIDIA's profit.

Lets see why people would want a laptop for gaming...
-Its much more portable than a desktop
-Its almost as powerfull
-and it can be cheaper than a desktop as well, if you go threw dell.

You obviously havent visited notebookforums.com, there are a LOT of people who game on their notebooks.

I love my 9300 w/ 6800 go. I can play any game that is out right now, with eye candy turned all the way up except for F.E.A.R.

good point, if you could find the mobility x800xt, it would be the best mobile GPU, but its just not available...:(

well what's this then?

I've never heard of that company, and couldn't seem to find any prices on their site, either. Got a reputable source that's selling this bad boy?

You folks seem to be taking this stuff way too seriously.

While it's true that MaximumPC reviewed an Alienware laptop sporting an X800XT that beat all the other laptops in speed tests including (barely) the 6800Ultra equipped Dell XPS2, Alienware is notorious for building products for reviews that they don't actually offer for sale. You're also comparing a high end P4 to a mobile Intel CPU so it's not a good test comparison for these cards. I was shopping for a gaming laptop recently and Alienware still hadn't actually offered a laptop with the X800XT and neither did anyone else. Looks like RockDirect is the first company to slap together a Clevo gaming laptop with this card. Still doesn't mean they will actually ship it to you today.

Probably the newer X800XT does edge out the older 6800Go Ultra in most performance tests (Doom3 notwithstanding) but if you can't buy it all this is academic and does not yeild any profits for ATi. In any case the difference is probably pretty small.

And yes, I use laptops for gaming. I travel a lot spending many nights in hotels offereing high speed internet access and also like to game. It's a hell of a way to pass the time in a strange city by yourself. I think college students also make good consumer targets for these rigs. Personally I like something in the 15.4 inch screen size over the Clevo behemoths like Alienware since I have to cart it around all day.

GeForce Go 7800GTX is scheduled to launch September 29. Clocks are 400/1100.

techPowerUp! has nVidia's presentation and slides Here

Think about it this way, which is easier to carry around, a tower, or a laptop? If you go to a lot of LAN events a gaming laptop offers you more than you need in terms of raw gaming power, and is far easier to cart around to events.

yup. I would agree with this fella. There is alot of advantages on owning a gaming laptop, more mobility (duh), and it's all in one for goodness sake! not forgetting the mouse :p

Awsome!!!!

I guess it's still not going to run cool enough to use in a non-Clevo, 15.4" notebook though.

There's no plan for that right now (unless there is someone w/direct contact to nvidia ;))
ATI is currently leading mobile graphics with the 16-pipe Mobility Radeon X800XT

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/06/08/2005/283/0/

You should check the benchmark comparisons with that X800 and the 6800 Go Ultra. Leading my @ss. ;)

Expect the 7800 Go to be released and SLi versions to follow shortly after (yes, SLi). Can't really provide you timelines, however.
Um...dunno how I missed that

16-pipelines 450MHz Core/450MHz Mem > 12-pipeline 450MHz Core/450MHz Mem

Therefore

ATI MR X800XT > NVIDIA GF Go 6800 Ultra

Oh, and ATI has an X800XT PE clocked at 480MHz Core/550MHz Mem. While it hasn't shown up in use yet, that's a helluva mobile clock.

Sorry, but NVIDIA is behind in the mobile GPU arena till the 7800's come out ;)

Let's keep fanboyism out of this forum, kthx

EDIT My bad, I thought this post was in the Notebook forum; fanboyism is an unfortunate reality of Vide :( *runs back to notebook forum*

yeah, clockspeeds and pipelines are the only parts of a Graphics card that effect performance.

I think this thread was started about the 7800Go, not a flameware about current ATi and NVidia products and what mobile GPU was one percent faster than the other in what game. Getting the X800 confused with the X800XT is what happenned to this guy here. No big deal.

Honestly I think some of you people don't understand the powerful effect healthy competition has on a free market.

Which takes me back to the topic at hand. My suspicion is that NVidia has rushed this mobile version of their new GPU to take away some of the limelight ATi will certainly get next month with the release of their new products. I wonder how quickly ATi will match NVidia's move to maintain it's edge on the mobile market.

Whatever happens, you know it will be some cool stuff running in laptops over the next few months.

I should be meeting with NVIDIA sometime before the official launch on the 29th, so I'll see what other details on the Go 7800GTX I can uncover ;)

No word on ATI's next mobile solution, but I'll inquire

 What does that have to do with the Go 7800GTX?

Whats with the 3DMark scores though? How could this only get a 3660?
My guess is drivers maybe? The configs had 1GB RAM, 7200RPM drives, 2+Ghz Pentium M CPU, etc.

We have a Dell M170 on the way to test, so we'll have 100% verified benchies then :D

I'm finding out of the 7800 will fit into an XPS Gen2, and if so, I'm going to pick the card up separately. If not, then I'll pick up the M710 (or I may wait until a laptop with these in SLi are available).

they should have compared it side by side a desktop 7800GTX, i guess we'll have to wait for anandtech's review.
