When will the cheap 4k displays hit the US?

I know there are a few of them available in Asia, but when will they hit the US? So far Sekei is the only company to bring them over (they have a 39" available soon for $699), and I'm not too interested in those because they don't offer a displayport so are limited to 30Hz over HDMI.

Asus has a 39" based off the same cheaper panel tech coming that's supposed to offer a displayport, but we have no idea on price.
 
Also, will cheap 4K displays put some more price pressure on 1440p and 1600p displays? The Seiki seems like it would, but everything else I'm seeing suggests that the 4K displays will simply be in an entirely different price segment and so won't really affect the lower priced displays.
 
I think the fact that 1600p monitors haven't dropped in price in the past few years despite all the super high resolution phone and laptop lcds is good evidence that the price wont be impacted by 39"+ 4k screens. They will either be much more expensive than 1600p or the sizes wont come down to a manageable 30"-32". As a gamer I run into a lot of issues even at 1600p where UI is too small to read and there are no options to change it. The 30" size also increases the amount of saccades and head moving to read parts of the UI or see points of interest. Even when it works well, 30" is about the max I'd want for some games, and I don't think a higher pixel count at 30" would make much difference unless you had way better than 20/20 vision. IMO, where 4k would really shine is in the larger screens (aka TVs) more than computer monitors.

As for the availability, I don't see how anyone could know that unless they are a higher up in one of the companies and they likely wouldn't be at liberty to say. I'd like for prices to come down too though, but I think I'd probably buy another 30" 1600p even if the slightly larger 4k monitors were similarly priced.

Until we get one that offers displayport, they're garbage - supposedly displayport models will be released until later this fall. All of the current 4k displays are HDMI 1.4, meaning they're completely worthless and support only 30hz.

The upcoming Asus models are based on Sharp IZGO and VA Panels, and will support 60hz with a single Displayport cable. I'm perhaps most excited by the AMVA panel 4k screen - VA panels are extremely impressive in terms of contrast and black levels, I can't wait to see how the 39" Asus model fares. VA panels absolutely trump IPS and TN panels in by those metrics - they should make for excellent 4k screens.
 
For people who like high FPS, im not sure these will be practical for a while, but the good news is that if you lower the res on a screen like that, you might not get the screen door effect with such a high PPI. That could totally rock actually.

Asus stated that the 39 inch VA 4k panel won't be out until Jan 2014 🙁

That was the one I was MOST looking forward too! VA panels are quite nice, they were only limited to 1080p until now. They also have better contrast/black levels/motion clarity than IPS as well.

Tomshardware has an asus AMA on their front page where it is mentioned. Note that the IZGO panel is being released this year, but the AMVA panel 4k screen will not be released until 2014. Actually, from what I remember the 32 inch IZGO panel is being released next month - it will include displayport functionality for 60hz via a single cable.

I consider the AMVA variant to be better, for the presumably better contrast ratios, motion clarity and deeper blacks. As far as I can tell, IZGO is similar to current LCDs in every way - not that it's bad, but if there's an AMVA version - I believe the AMVA will be better.

While on the topic, when will we get laptops with decent displays. The Macbooks got em, but I want a gaming lappy with a ~2560 x 1600 or better display as well, or even 4K for that matter. 😛

Gaming at suck a laptop would need a Nuclear battery with current GPU tech.

Corrected.

The display isn't the issue, HDMI won't pass 4K at anything greater than 30Hz ATM. While the display may be technically able to do it,
the signaling standard wont let it.
