When will the 8800GT come down to it's promised price?

Ok it's had some time to cool down but still I don't see an 8800GT for $200.

Was it all false hope from the get go?

When was the 8800GT promised for $200?

The market promises nothing. MSRP stands for "Manufacturer's SUGGESTED Retail Price".

Pessimism aside, I believe there are 8800GT 512MBs that can be easily had under the $250 MSRP.

Don't know where you heard the 8800GT would be $200...

wow is it still that bad for the 512MB models? i haven't followed prices since i picked up my 512MB GT back in november for $250. they were available for $209 a couple times and $219 often, just after launch, but of course sold out almost immediately. then the prices went up =P

I believe the 512MB 8800gt was never promised to sell for $200, and even for $250 it's a great deal.

at initial release NV product people said the stock 512 was supposed to come down to ~$200 and the 256 a bit less than that.

Given the bios fan issues, stock but actually overclocked versions, and cooler revisions; it feels like they rushed a product out to rain on AMD/ATI's 38xx release party. With the 9600gt coming out barely 3 months later and the D9P coming in June, I'm beginning to wonder if they'll ever produce the 8800gt en masse. Why bother, when they need to jump to DX10.1 and HDMI audio link relatively soon.

It's a basic law of economics. As long as demand outstrips supply the price will remain high. Once nVidia introduces the next gen 9xxx model the prices might drop ~25-40$.
