i think those "hybrid" tablets are cool....the ones that have a keyboard and swiveling display. i think Toshiba has one.

i personally have no use for a tablet form factor, but i'm sure there are those who do.

I think they're cool too, but they're still laptops, not TabletPCs, IMO.

I can talk faster than I can type or write. When tablet PC's can do voice translation accurately and well (ie: when we have the software for it), we won't need keyboards so much, if we also find a way to get it to understand whispered words.

Just what we need, more people yapping into electronic devices in public.

They're nice in theory for taking notes, until you realize that you'd rather doodle around and draw with them than actually take notes...

I can think faster than I can talk, type, or write. When tablet PC's can do telekinesis accurately and well...

They are already replacing laptops in alot of professional and industrial sectors. Will they ever replace laptops as a whole? No. But they were never intended to.

Same can be said pen and paper.

The convertible (hybrid) TPCs do everything a laptop does. They don't have to be cheaper or as-cheap because being able to write on the screen has great value for some applications. With wireless networking becoming popular everywhere, the TPC advantages are even greater. You have doctors who use them for patient charts today. Why start with paper then scan it, when you can have information in electronic form right from the start?

Once you see applications which are tailored for the TPC, you'll realize they have a lot of value. They are quite popular already with architects, real estate agents, construction sites, or anywhere you want to use a PC but aren't in an office.

I got my first one a year ago and a second one last month. They aren't gamer machines, but for anyone else they have all the performance you'd want from a laptop. I can take a document and annotate it in handwriting, then come back and search it for either the original printed text or my handwritten notes.

There's no question you can type faster than you can write, but there are other applications where that isn't a factor.

For good information on TPCs, check out the forums at http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com

I hope to get my Demo Scribler 2010 next week.
9 hour battery life with wifi on was the major selling point.

I hope the handwriting feature is mature enough for data entry (history, physicals) medical field.

I am also hoping the voice recognition software matures quickly.

voted for tablets specially for those people who actually do work with there laptops.

Kranky's on the mark.

I just got in HP Compaq tc1100 and though I've experienced gadget burnout this year I can see one of these fitting nicely into my lifestyle. The thing is, from voice and handwriting recognition to drawing, notes, quick-boot and ease of use above and beyond the 'laptop' features I'd prefer to carry one of these than my Nw8000. My laptop as configured is more powerful than most people's gaming rigs (and it games very well) but for everyday use; meetings, presentations and the aforementioned benefits among others make this device more user centric than a laptop.

My interest isn't whether the TabletPC (convertible/hybrid) will replace the Laptop (because in all but the most demanding applications it already can) but which Tablets' fit, form and function performs better than others.

Laptops won't go away, they'll just go less places once people understand what tablets can do for you. And they're only getting better. Obviously, if you don't need, want or would use the functions of a tabletpc then the argument is of a different nature.

i don't think the slates will replace laptops, but the convertibles might.

but so far every tablet i've used has had stability issues, i don't know why this is.

Only the convertibles have a chance as a replacement for laptops, and currently convertibles are bulkier and heavier than regular laptops.
