I've got not problem with people smoking as long as it doesn't affect anyone else.

That means not smoking around others unless they're OK with it (and the vast majority of non-smokers is not ok with you lighting up next to them) and the actual cost of smoking needs to cover the related costs of their choice. The big thing that needs to cover is increased medical bills. A guy I work with used to smoke like a chimney until he put himself in the hospital for two weeks with pneumonia which the doctor is positive came from his constant smoking. That two week stay at the hospital wasn't cheap and the cost gets passed on to everyone else in our health plan.

Probably never. The amount of money the government gets from taxes on tobacco is pretty substantial. I see smoking being around as long as the government needs money. 😛

People should be aloud to smoke whatever plant they want, its their choice, its their body, its their health. They already have laws protecting non-smokers from second hand smoke, I think thats enough.

If they ban smoking, I hope a smoker kills whoever did it. This shit is getting ridiculous. You really think you're that much better than everybody else that you can jail them if they do something you don't want them to do?

If I said something offensive here, I'm sure I'd get banned or something. Even though what the OP posted is far more offensive. Calling for the imprisonment of free people because they fucking smoke.

LET'S JUST FIND EVERYBODY WE DON'T LIKE AND PUT THEM IN FUCKING OVENS! Why skip a step in between? Just do what you really want to.

I hope never. I don't smoke, don't allow smoking in my home or car, and I don't enjoy being around it. However, I believe people should have the right to choose to smoke or not.

never happen. too much money in generated through taxes to totally ban it.

This. Same with alcohol too...even if tens of thousands of innocent people are killed at untold damage done by those that drink and drive. Too much revenue from the liquor and beer sales.

Man I might have to quit with the way the scumbums in NY are taxing it. I live in upstate and a pack of Camels is now $9.15! Fucking scumbums!

This. Now all I need is the day when I can stroll around town with a fat doobie lit up. It doesn't harm anyone else, so why is it banned?

So there are still people out there that think alcohol is only legal so the government can tax it?

Yeah, that's kind of messed up. Time to start bringing large amounts of money to New Hampshire and buy a couple of cases of cartons at a time.

Actually smokers are considered great for health care as they pay a higher burden of the costs and tend to die fairly young. The current cigarette taxes do take health costs into account, and in fact the consensus is that the taxes are higher than they need to be (in some cases drastically so) to cover the extra health costs.

Economically speaking the best way to regulate would be to tax unwanted behaviors such that at minimum they pay for the externalities they cause. The problem is, because of the negativity about smoking, the government has been able to use that as a buoy for when they need more money. They raise cigarette tax, claim its to help children or for people's health when they're just corrupt and can't get their balance sheets in order or they want a new pet project to keep themselves in office. Of course, most people aren't going to defend cigarette companies (nor should they after the shit they pulled). I guess you could say its karma.

That is one slippery slope... where do you stop? do fat people get taxed more for every pound they are overweight? that's just one example... i'm sure we all can think of hundreds more....

Not close enough, though I am close to PA. Naw, just have to head down to the smoke shop. Normally I wouldn't care much about the cost (smoke a pack every 3-4 days) but things are tight so rolling my own will do! Nice tin of Bali Shag and some tubes shouldn't be more than $20-25 and good for like 8 packs worth. I know the price of rolling tobacco has went up too but last I checked was still around 1/3, maybe 40% of the cost of brand name cigs.

It will be outlawed the day the gov't can't get any more money out of the companies making them and the people who smoke.
