Apple devices tend to be supported better and longer than Android devices. Planned obsolescene is a phrase I'd associate with Android devices, not iOS devices.

try to keep up with the thread. this is specifically about nexus devices which Google is the responsible party to push updates. and his comment was directed also specifically against a nexus device - which Google updates very well.

and also, even though applie will support older devices with a new OS download, older devices tend to slow down significantly with each new OS. usually the iOS update 2-3 years, depending on the past generation unit and iOS version, after the launch of a phone starts to make it noticeably worse to the point that people are unhappy.

The 2013 N7 will never see L. Google will hold it for the new lineup, so it's going to have to be some OS to get us current owners to pony up for another device. As for competing with Samsung, the one advantage Google has is not loading up their hardware with all the bloat Samsung is in love with; I'd root my SG4 if I could, but alas. So yeah, Google should come out with another generation of tablets, but keep them lean and mean.

Is this a bad time to buy Nexus 7? Considering there should be a new Nexus soon. But from what I read around here, that will be a bigger screen and more expensive. So is Nexus 7 the only good option for a 7 to 8 inch tablet? I have heard Samsung ones have bad battery life.

The nexus 9 will most likely be in the 350 range, maybe less to compete with the shield tablet. If your interested, the samsung tab s 8.4 is a solid tablet with one of the best displays and solid battery life. The nexus 7 is still a solid tablet for the price.

Nexus 10 is too bulky, modern tablets have really cut down on the bezel. I would consider a Nexus 9" tablet at ~$350.

I just picked up an Nvidia Shield last week, and the thing is faster than any mobile device I've ever used.

Like nothing lags. Nexus 9 will be a great tablet.

I don't think the Nexus 9 will start at $350. I'm guessing $280-$300, at least for the entry level model (god I hope it's not 16GB). There may be a higher storage capacity for $350 though.

Google generally sells their tablets and phones pretty cheap, without much profit. The profit really comes from the apps and advertising.

According to that report, the new Nexus tablet is expected to be released in the third quarter but there has been no announcement yet of any event. So maybe this isn't getting released anytime soon

The tablet will be released with the debut of Android L, whenever google gets around to finishing that.
