And then, there are the 'chameleons' who do great characters, but no one ever says 'wow, what an actor!'

See: Steve Lemme of Broken Lizard (best IMDB main page photo ever)

I watched Super Troopers, Club Dread, and Beerfest, and always thought Broken Lizard was just four guys plus 'some different random fifth guy in every movie' before I realized it was the same dude. :D

A less silly example: John C Reilly (well, okay, he's fuckin' silly sometimes, but he's done serious roles, too).

He needs to be in a movie in which the Jews are being oppressed and killed by the Nazis, or play a gay character, or a mentally challenged character, or a physically unattractive, physically challenged and mentally challenged character at the same time, who overcomes all odds against the prejudiced and cruel world. Or he needs to be related to Francis Ford Coppola.

He should've won the Oscars for best supporting male for his slave owner role in Django Unchained.

IM GONNA GET IT ALL BACK, DADDY!

should have won on oscar for that imho

Yeah, I thought Catch Me If You Can was very underrated, and DiCaprio was excellent in it, perfect for it really. So was Tom Hanks.

You know who I forgot as a great chameleon and just stupendous actor, is Ben Kingsley. I just watched him in Sexy Beast (2000) and was remembering him in and Schindler's List (1993) and Gandhi (1982). It's like he hasn't aged a day.

Blood Diamond was a great movie, and he was pretty good in it, but Forest Whitaker was scary as hell at times in the Last King of Scotland. I'd even say Leonardo's co-star (black dude) deserves the Oscar more than he does for that movie.

Don Cheadle's a way better actor than Leo, even his name's way better sounding. If they had an Oscar category for coolest name Cheadle would win every year

the dude is a very good actor. and he chooses good roles in good movies. dudes love to hate him because of the failboat that was Titanic but at the end of the day, he is excellent.

basketball diaries, blood diamond, inception, revolutionary road, django, departed, shutter island, aviator, catch me if you can, gangs of new york

It may be a generational thing. I never really saw any of his 'classics.'

Which probably why a lot of his generation falls into my 'I don't get it' list. Pacino, DeNiro, Nicholson...they all just seem very typecast, one-note actors. But it's probably because they already gave their 'great' performances and are now largely just working for a paycheck.

It's hard to even come up with who the 'new generation' of greats is...there are some holes to fill. Immediate thoughts: DiCaprio, Damon, Gyllenhaal...shit I'm running out already...Pitt and Clooney are getting a little older, dunno if they'd fall in with the same group...uhh...Gordon-Levitt?

Fuck me, who's make decent movies anymore?

Which Pacino movies have you seen, exactly?

Leo's most impressive work was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, that's been his best shot so far.

You might want to actually watch some movies from the actors you've mentioned.

Jack Nicholson is the most nominated actor at the academy awards. He's won 3 times. One note? Does he have to play a crossdresser or what? We have DeNiro for that. Pacino? Really? Just look at some of the movies these guys have been in. Leo hasn't reached this level yet. You must be looking at movies like Anger Management, Meet the Fockers, and Jack and Jill and judging these guys or something. To the rest of us these roles are just hilarious to see them in. Deniro's "crowning achievement" was in Stardust.

Sam Jackson might be the greatest actor ever, who else in Hollywood could start in A Time to Kill and Snakes On A Plane? Sam's the most versatile actor I've ever seen. He's also beyond awesome in Black Snake Moan. As much as I lovd Dinero, Pacino & Denzel, none of them could have pulled off Snakes Of A Plane. Leo damn sure couldn't have stared in Snakes On A Plane!

Snakes on a plane boils down to that one line. Anyone could have done that one line. Cathy Bates, Julia Roberts, Seth Rogan, and even Leo.

Nope, nobody drops the f bomb like Sam, his cussing is legendary.

"snakes on a mother fucking plane!" - Cathy Bates.... LOL she's a fine actress but she ain't saying that and making it hit home.

And it wasn't just the 1 line, it was the fact a highly skilled awesome actor who's been in some damn fine movies did one about snakes on a plane. Leo could not have done that movie at all. The only actor who maybe could have pulled it off would be another of my top 5 favorite actors of all times. Bruce Willis.

No. They're just terrible.

I was trying to be nice. But actually, those three actors in particular are fucking shitty as shitty gets.

So many great supporting actors in that movie. I actually go with Sam Jackson as the best.. his portrayal was downright spooky. I think the makeup folks did a great job on him too.
