They better be doing it soon. I'm getting tired of these new games coming out on three freakin' CDs! PUT THEM ON DVD FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

PS2 games are DVD (some of them)...

It would make sense; just about every game that's coming out now is at least 2-3 cds, it's a real pain in the @$$.

When Game devs decide it's financially viable. Which will likely be 6mo to 18mo after all computers from Dell, Gateway, Compaq, IBM, Toshiba, HP, Acer, etc etc come with ONLY DVDROM drives and the CDROM drive(s) has fallen by the 'way side'.

Maybe based upon a quick poll here at AT but not in the real world.

That's like saying everyone is on cable/DSL these days. ;)

I know what you're saying though. So many CDs! At least the majority of games still fit on one CD and even if there's more than one it's still not as annoying as all the disc-swapping on the PSX.

The original Baldur's Gate was released in a DVD version. :D

Yes, but those people aren't going to be playing the new games that come out. Either:

1. You build your own system to play the latest games, therefore you have a DVD drive
2. You purchase a new system to play the latest games, therefore you have a DVD drive
3. You use your current system to play games that has a CD-ROM drive, but since it's not powerful enough to play the latest games, whether or not they are released on DVD has no bearing on you.

Therefore I don't see why they don't release the DVDs.

Yah, but that monster is 6 discs with the expansion! Tile-based 2D games tend to take up much more disk capacity, but everything's moving towards 3D hardware. That extra space is being taken up by more detailed textures, more voice acting, and more CG cutscenes.

I'm more annoyed by the flimsy paper sleeving many companies have gone to. Kudos to EA for still making jewel cases with case art.
Also, a move to DVD would be costly for publishers as well. They'd need to upgrade their presses and DVD media is more expensive than CD media. Of course, this just translates into higher game costs, so personally I don't mind swapping disks once and then never again (Daemon tools :D). I just want my jewel cases back. :|

Did someone say that if you are a gamer you own a DVD drive? What kind of sense does that make as the only reason to have a DVD drive right now is to umm watch DVD's. Well, I suppose a small group of people may have some DVD storage but that's a VERY small amount of people.

I play the latest games. I don't have a DVD player.

I'm running an Athlon XP 2100+/Radeon 9700 Pro/768mb DDR PC2100 ....plenty powerful enough to run the latest games.

There's no reason for a DVD player in a PC for gaming UNTIL the games begin requiring that kind of storage capacity.

DVD drives are the same price as CD drives. While there is no reason for you to upgrade now, there is also no reason to buy a CD-ROM drive anymore.

I don't have a DVD drive and not going to add it into my list for a new system build. I have a DVD player in my room and a CDrw on my computer, so no real need for getting one for the computer for the time being.

Someone said DVD's are more expensive than CD's, but which is cheaper, 6 CD's or 1 DVD? I'm guessing it wouldn't be that much more expensive more a DVD over multiple CD's, then there's the coding required to tell setup to look on the next CD's (probably not that much though, if anything in some cases), but there is also the packaging, which is usually different for CD's if there are 3 or so, than a single DVD case, and single DVD cases are more commonplace, so possibly cheaper than cases for 3 CD's.

Price difference woul dbe so minimal though, so I don't see that as an excuse not to move on, and as someone said, MOST people with a new PC capable of playing the latest games would have a DVD drive, even if some people don't bother with one. Most system manufacturers also make their systems with DVD drives, so your average consumer will have a PC with DVD drive.

Riven was released on DVD. One of the first, I think. PS2 games also.

I think they will release DVD version as soon as it become cheaper to make one DVD than 5 CD's.

I don't put CD drives in my computers I put CDRWs. Much more functional than DVD.

Except they can't play DVDs ;)

Anyways, if they do go DVD they better have Dolby Digital 5.1 sound tracks. I've got an A2 and EAX is sweet, but DD 5.1 with my XBox rocks.

How many people do you really think have 5.1 setups on their computer? That's probably not a good argument to convince developers to use DVD.

Well they'd need to find some use for all that extra storage space. :) By the same tolken, not everyone who owns or watches DVDs has a 5.1 set-up, but that's probably b/c they don't know what they're missing out on. DD 5.1 in games would be one more reason for people to move towards a 5.1 set-up instead of trying to convince themselves there's no need for it on a PC. :)

Chiz

Edit: Oh, and I'm not saying its a valid reason to move towards DVDs for games, I'm just saying if they did make the move, its one less excuse for them to say, "Well if we included DD5.1 support the game would have been 6 discs instead of 5."

I bet a lot of people would have a hard time even setting up a 5.1 system. It's one thing to have surround sound setup in your TV room, it's already arranged for it. You've got a screen on one side of the room and places to sit directly across from it. Often it's an entire room so you've got walls right behind where you're sitting to mount the speakers.

Computers are many times put where ever there happens to be room. Plus you sit right in front of a computer, not 8 feet away like a TV. My office at home has my computer, my girlfriends computer behind it, a server, bookcases, etc. I couldnt' really set up a 5.1 system even if I wanted to.

I can see where it would be advantageous, to hear footsteps coming from behind you and so forth. But it'll be many years before I have more than a 2 speaker system on my computer. I can't dedicate an entire room to my game box.
