Anyone know?
I'm thinking to upgrade my p2-266, but I was afraid if they will release new generation cpu soon .....

Update: Quote from Anandtech
Luckily the 1.4GHz Athlon should be the last Thunderbird based processor for AMD, paving the way for the 1.5GHz Athlon based on the cooler running Palomino core to be released sometime in the May - June timeframe."

You should be able to use the next athlon in your MB just fine.(I said should)

Has for when, sometime later on this year.

and you found your answer!

May I suggest going with a duron for the intern. It peforms great and cost very little.

If I may be so bold as to take a swing at this one...

I currently have a system that is embarassing, and I am getting ready to build, as well. It is my understanding that almost all of the higher quality KT133A mobos mentioned on this forum will be able to support the Palomino. So, here's my strategy - do what you will with it!

Buy a low-end T-Bird for < $90-100 and overclock that bad boy to higher FSB. You will get such a performance boost over your 266 that it won't matter it's not a 1.2+ GHz. Then, 9-10 months down the road, you'll be able to buy a cheap Palomino that's been out a few months (and probably only cost $150).

Simple. Safe. VERY cost-effective...with unbelievable performance improvements! :D

You can keep on waiting forever, there will always be something better on the horizon...I thought I had kept my P200 MMX too long when I bought a new system last Feburary (AMD Athlon 650 Slot A). This summer I am going to sell the motherboard, CPU and HSF and get a new Athlon system.

The current motherboards will almost undoubtedly support Palomino, but if you have a 1+ GHz chip, what will be the point of upgrading the CPU?

Exactly! With my brother getting some extra cash, tax returns, and us just getting mad with this damn slow system :), I'm more than likely gonna get a Tbird very soon. Looking at a 1.2ghz 266mhz fsb and a MSI K7t-Turbo. Then I see Palomino core coming out in a couple months. Argh! I thought I would have a fast one for a while too! But if I did wait that long I don't know if I could afford it since it'd be more expensive. So it's hard choosing between getting the fastest, waiting, and the price/performance. But if the Palomino core is just a die shrink so it's cooler then it's not a big deal since it's just a faster Tbird.

See this page from an article here at Anandtech to see how extraordinary of a suggestion this is; maybe even more extraordinary if you go with a oc'd 600 or 650 MHz Duron (by pushing the FSB to 133 MHz on a VIA KT-133A based mobo) both of which are available here and here.

Don't forget to go with a GOOD HSF!

BTW: Since the Durons are so inexpensive and you'll probably only be able to bump a Duron 600 to 800 and possibly a 650 to 867 (and with the added cost of the HSF to the OEM part) you could just buy a retail boxed 750, 800 or 850 (all less than $100) from here and here or here!

Thanks for the compliments, and one more bit on this:

9-10 months down the road, when you decide to purchase that 1.4+ GHz Palomino for $150 or less, you'll probably be able to overclock it to 1.6+ GHz. That speed should last the money-conscious individual for an additional 1.5-2 years, assuming the trend continues in the rate of software development and software system requirements. Note the word "system REQUIREMENTS" - not "desirements"! :Q
