When will AMD CPU prices Drop?

I'm waiting to build my next system and have been looking at an AMD system this time around. The prices on the CPUs seem to be way out of line right now. Any thoughts on when the prices might drop. I'm thinking of either a 3400+ (754) or the 3500+ (939). Both are priced pretty high. I realize that they are still somewhat new... but prices have actually gone up quite a bit.

Any thoughts/info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not for a while.

The time to buy A64 system would be now though. Just buy a 2800 64 150'ish or 3000 180's or 3200 for 210.

The 3400 is up 290's...

Remember now..that just a month ago the 3200 was priced at 280 and the 3400 was at 400's.

2800 was at 190.

The prices have already gone down a bit.

🙂

Pixle.

I guess they are down a bit. But would love to see the 3500+ at somewhere around the $280 mark. Really not that much more to drop. Maybe I'll just work a couple of days of overtime and spring for the fast one.

But the idea of a 3000 or 3200 isn't a bad idea either. Just figured I could get a couple of good years out of a 3500+ instead of 1.5 out of a 3200.

Thanks for the post...

All the mainstream Intel chips have had a huge price drop. AMD however have gone up, here in Australia..

Yes; they're supposed to extend the S939 line down to 3000+ or so (possibly adding in some Sempron CPUs) by the end of the year.

They cut prices a month or so ago, when Intel made their summer price cuts (although AMD actually cut their prices first this time). The next cuts will probably be in November, when Intel usually makes their next pricing move.

Bottom line: if you can hold off another 2-3 months, prices for AMD64 CPUs (especially the S939 ones) should drop noticeably, and you'll likely be able to get a low-end S939 CPU. But the S754 chips are already fairly reasonable now, IMO (at least the 3000+/3200+).

Upgrading is a tricky beast right now. For 754, a 2800 for 150 dollars is almost a decent price(for me), but I guess worth it over the $120 XP 3200+ if your building a new system. I don't think you need to get the 3400 for the bigger performance. The game benchmarks I've seen seem to peak after the 3200. If they do extend the 939 sockets lower that might be a good deal. The 3500 is the same performance as the 3400, but more expensive and not that much higher in games over the 3200/3000.

Well... good thoughts, but still leaves me wondering. I don't remember seeing any significant price drops on the AMD side. Must not have been watching closely enough. The Prescott P4's don't excite me... which seems to be a common consensus. So either I go for a lower end AMD, wait until November or so... or just bite the bullet.

Seeing as I'm also waiting for the X800 cards to show up in force... waiting another month or two might not be that big of a deal. It will be interesting to see how the video card prices adjust once they start ramping up the retail production of the ATI cards.

Anyway... still in limbo... I'll start saving my money and hope that by the time I buy the new system... prices will have dropped a bit so I have some cash left over to buy a few Christmas gifts!

They are out there.. just not from Microsoft..
Hopefully we'll get 64 bit goodness by the end of this year (I don't know what the roadmap is - just wishful thinking).

no point in buying a 3400 or 3500 for so much more... i went with a 3200 cause i got a killer deal on it.
performance difference is completely not worth the added price. some people may argue that, but they just have money to burn, because a few percent jump (from say 3200+ to 3500+) is not worth like $100 or more for the average person.
