When will 4K monitors become available?

Sharp was supposed to come out with their 32" monitor (sharp PN-K321) in February in Japan but it's been pushed back to this month. However, I cannot find any retailers in Japan that have it. Any idea when it'll be available in America? Or any 4K monitor in general?

If you have to ask, you aren't going to be able to afford it for a very long time.

What? I plan on buying one. I know they cost $6k. The wife will be going to Japan next week so maybe she can bring it back but I just assumed it'd be available online somewhere. Do you know where it is?

I would wait a year after the first models are available to buy one. There are bound to be significant quirks and annoyances that get resolved in the first yearly refresh that would make having spent $6 grand on one of the initial versions a bad move.

It's a business expense.

You can already get monitors with higher pixel density than 4K tvs; but they won't become affordable until they are mass produced. I doubt this will happen soon because it drives everything up (graphics card et all). While it could be done at an affordable price I just don't believe there is enough interest to support such a market a reasonable cost.

TVs are a bit of a different matter since the pixel density is quite low so the 'impact' is greater. The biggest pia (for video market) is media. You would need a 100GB-150GB disk to support 4K which implies a new standard. On the postive side (for producers) is it will provide (a) a method to resell many movies a third cycle (dvd, blu-ray, 4k) but also allow them to redo the DRM so it is less hackable (though historically they always fail here 🙂 )

With regards to Dari specific question I think the sharp will be the first (almost) true 4k monitor; though if you are willing to go with 56 inch there are a couple of alternatives 🙂
(I.e, technically it is sub-4k)

Anyways here is a link to a 65inch 4K tv that you can use as a monitor 🙂

Id look at places that supply professional gear for film and video. They'll have that sort of monitor in stock. I wouldn't know where to look in japan specifically.

I don't see anything @ that link that is 4k; you can find many monitors of similar resolution (not 4k but eizo max resolution @ newegg) with this link:

(basically power search and select max resolution which is
2560 x 1600 - not sure if 2560 x1400 has higher pixel density; didn't check sizes)

anyways these are all 27/30 inch:

anyways I don't think Dari is looking for these. However I did find this true 4k monitor for sale at B&H:

(pre order)

However I think I would wait for the sharp given the price of that thing.

Eizo got some too.

So plenty of monitors. Its just a matter of cost.

Hey is B&H actually worht visiting. I keep thinking about popping up to NY and stopping by along with other stuff.

B&H is definitely worth visiting if you're into professional gear or just expensive gear. They're prices are also very competitive with what you'd find online as well, too. But, you have to plan your trip since they adhere strictly to Jewish law and close often and early.

I don't know why I find that funny, I just picture them using that as a reason to take the day off. 😛

I love B&H. I imagine most of their revenue comes from internet mail order so closing the store now and then doesn't really hit their bottom line all that much. I just got some stuff in from them yesterday. 🙂 Domke camera bag FTW!

They shut down Internet ordering during the Sabbath and for long stretches during the High Holidays as well .. They are a go to source for pro video gear , and that's definitely a 'pay to play' space .. Video reference monitors are $$$$..
