Dual Layered drives have been out for quite a while but yet I have to see some manufacturer put them into a Set Top DVD Recorder.

What the heck are you guys waiting for?

What is the problem?

I put it here in video because there is no electronics section and I needed to vent.

Forget it man. DVD is dying.

With HD-DVD and/or Blue Ray technology coming out within the next 6 months manufacturers are probably wise to avoid puting more effort into a dying technology like DVD.

Take this argument as a for instance. What is the price of a single layer DVD blank media disc? Cheap right? And how much for a dual-layer disc? Many times more expensive. Why buy one dual-layer for .. whatever the price, say $2 when you can buy two single-layer discs for 50 cents? Well, the price is going to go down on dual-layer discs you say. True, but by the time the price does come down the next-gen media will be available and the last stats I read on either HD-DVD or Blue Ray they have a storage capacity at least 6 times a single-layer disc.

So what's the point in investing anything more in mere DVD technology?

I know it just seems dumb to me since all they have to do is change the drive and flash a bios to double the recording time. But then they could do that with HD-DVD drive in them also. Blue Ray I have no faith in.

Recorders at this point really wouldnt go up in price since I dont think anyone even makes a single layered burner anymore.

I buy a lot of DL media since I record HD.
