i connect s-video out from video card to back of my TV
but what about the sound?
how do I get the TV to play sound?

You hook up the line-out (or speaker outputs) of your sound card to a receiver or speakers (or your TV if it has appropriate audio inputs). You'll probably need a stereo minijack->stereo RCA adapter cable unless you hook it up to "computer" speakers.
