I have never built one from scratch, but I have replaced most of the parts from the one I bought from Best Buy around Christmas.

same here. wow! I can get a 3000 dollar computer for 1500 bucks!!!!

I forget, but somethinging like a 200 Mhz celeron processor and you could push it to a whopping 300 mhz!!!! Unreal and quake ran really well on this new fangled graphic card that owned the market called 3dfx.

-edit-
I remember now. a 300 mhz cheap processor that easily ran 450 mhz. mind blowing speed.

1996. Pentium 100 MHz.

Bought a Dell in '98. Pentium-2 400 MHz.
Bought a Dell in '01. Pentium-4 2.0 GHz.

I added components to and upgraded those over the years, but now I'm building my second computer ever, 10 years later.

yeah, to play 486 games.

mind you, the p3-700 or 800 was out at the time i built that thing. i got most of the parts at the sidewalk sale in dallas. cost $40 or so. the used hard drive i bought already had dos on it.

i don't think i ever used it and i left it under the sink at my last apartment. according to my old roommate it is still sitting there.
