I tried and failed. Twice.

Assassination Attempt by Vladimir Arutyunian, Tbilisi, Georgia (10-May-2005)

On 10 May 2005, during a rally at which U.S. president George W. Bush and Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili were speaking, Arutyunian threw a live grenade at the stage, though the grenade did not detonate. Arutyunian was apprehended following a shoot-out in his apartment on 20 July 2005, in which he killed Zurab Kvlividze, head of the Anti-Terrorist Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry, and was shot three times in the legs. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 12 January 2006.

Saying, "I'm going to kill the President" is a threat. Saying "I wish he had succeeded at killing the President" or "I hope someone kills the President" is not a threat. In my opinion it's actually a sign of reason and caring about humanity.
