good storyline, i also like the character development. no over the top action (doing a backflip and firing a gun with seemingly endless magazine). very well done and directed movie.

Lets see here. This weekend we watched:

Hero, 2/5 can I have my time back?
I, Robot 3/5 better than I had expected.
Collateral, 3/5 not as good as expected.
Resident Evil, ?/5 was surfing ATOT during it. Musta sucked.
Harry Potter: Prisoner, 4/5 as good as any other.
Friday Night Lights, 4/5 as good as expected.
There was another one, I can't remember what it was.

Really I havn't seen a movie in the Shawshank Redemption class in quite a while.

As far as Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption:

What is it about these two movies that everyone LOVES. I mean, can you articulate and pinpoint exactly what you love about them? I'll watch shawshank when it runs on a sunday afternoon during the summertime when I have nothing else to do... but nothing about it was "profound"? What attracts so many people to it.

I'm just trying to understand :)

Good pick. I enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite quite a bit but would not say it's in the class of movies to which I'm referring.

You liked a Harry potter movie? WTF? All your other ratings mean nothing to me now.

I also thought Solaris (U.S.) was quite good too - better than most reviewers felt it was (despite negative comparisons to the original, I thought it was a good meditative piece)

Edit: hm. not terribly recent. I will have to try harder.

I had to turn Gump off after a couple minutes it was so painfully bad (imo, of course)
Shawshank was passing fair, but I'd read the book first, which was better (of course)

I'm thinking, but no really clear explanation comes to mind... Movie taste seems like something that can't easily be explained or forced.

I think I just really liked the character of Forrest Gump. He's earnest and likable. That combined with great winks at the audience. Even without the winks, it's just a good story made excellent by the performance of the cast.

The thing about The Shawshank Redemption is, well, the redemption. The ending of that movie just makes me feel good.

Well, I saw the trailer for Sideways and it looks good. I like Paul Giamatti, so I'll probably check it out.

I also really want to see Life Aquatic. I'll have to add that to my list.

EDIT: I'm realizing that this is turning into a good movies thread, which misses the point. I want to know about movies that are in your top five. Are there any that were released within the last few years?

I'll be honest when I say this, everyone else may not agree but I thought Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse was one of better movies I've seen lately within the past year or two. I saw Assault on Precint 13 that movie blew.

There was something about that movie that I really liked, but I'm not sure what it was. I can honestly say I've never come away from a movie feeling so good about feeling so depressed.
Exactly how I feel about it...not depressed as much as hopeless/full of despair...

That is on my list of five worst movies ever. It's down there with Resident Evil, Monster's Ball, and Monster. Horrible, horrible movies.

*scratches head*

Hmmm....'Amelie', I think?

That's the ONLY good movie coming to mind, anyway. 'Solaris' (the original) wasn't bad, up there with '2001' for "the best SciFi has to offer, anyway".

Err....other *recent* good movies. Hrm....

EDIT: I kind of liked "The Shipping News", too. Been a while, though, and hard to say if it sticks with me because it was any GOOD, or because it was the first movie Keving Spacey was in that I didn't absolutely HATE him in.

(FWIW, never saw 'Shawshank Redemption', thought 'Forrest Gump' sucked balls HARD, and was indifferent about 'Gattaca' - interesting movie, but wouldn't call it "good".)

So is it more important that they be in the top 5 ever or in the last (e.g.) 5 years? ;)
