I think it was before or in the middle of WW2. I know income tax was started around WW2 and they made it saying when the war was over they would retract it but that never happened.

The reason hey said that is because they had to declare marshal law to make the IRS constitutional. Marshal law can only be declared during times of war. unfortunately, the constitution says nothing about having to go back to common law when the war is over, so they didn't, and we now pay federal taxes because of it.

FDR started the IRS To help pay for all of his programs to help bring the US out of the depression. It was supposed to be a TEMPORARY measure. You know give a democrat some money for a program and then it is NEVER TEMPORARY but will live forever. I say we repeal the IRS and witholding tax and go for a federal sales tax then you have a choice to spend your money and give them something or not. It is the only way to tax us fairly.

Just my $00.02

BTW the IRS is NOT part of the Gov. its privatly owned by about 20 banks and financial houses. If you notice on a W-4 when you fill it out that its Voluntary and it says so write above the place you sign.
You are making a contract with the IRS and giving them your money NOT the Gov. . Research it and see what you find out.

I have done a bit of research on this axman, but I was just discussing it with a co-worker (A Democrat I think), and wanted to hear nothing about it. yes, he has the wool WAY over his eyes. So far in fact, he doesn't WANT to see it :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that there has ever been a nation-wide declaration of marshal law in the USA-even during the Civil War. There was the suspension of certain rights and liberties during the Civil War (like habeus corpus, etc.) but no general marshal law.

I have gotten a chuckle out of some of the previous posts above-people with an obvious political viewpoint to forward making up historical "facts" to validate their viewpoints-like the FDR/WWII nonesense.

The first national income tax was instituted in the Civil War, and was declared unconstitutional. In 1913 the 16th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified permitting a federal income tax.

As to exactly when the Internal Revenue Service started, I do not know. As I recall, initially another institution/agency performed this function, but I could be wrong.

If you're really interested, I suggest researching the issue yourself-at the library (gasp) or through a search engine.
