Nothing beats the power of a good alcohol wipe followed by a iodine scrub. Clean that puppy out real good.

Peroxide is for when jimmy skins his knee. Not disinfecting. ;)

 Real men use 75% IPA.

I have a bottle of 90% sitting right here.

You can get 99% from the pharmacy quite easily.

I've got 99.9999% research grade stuff here at work, in addition to non-denatured ethanol ;)

While I don't have a reference, it's generally accepted that 70% is a more effect bacteriocide.

I remember that as a kid, I was told that the bubbling is the hydrogen peroxide eating away all the bad bacteria so I was taught that it was a great thing.

I thought that too... because after you pour it on once or twice, it doesnt bubble anymore (or not nearly as much)

Hydrogen peroxide really helps about once year when I get an ingrown toenail.

I think we were all told that lie. But there is some truth to it...

The effervescence (bubbling) helps lift debris (fomites) away.

..I was wondering whan some one would mention that. It's also used in gel form to bleach/whiten teeth but is comming under scrutiny for inducing oral cancers.

Isopropanol, ethanol etc. are all bad for you; exclusive of microbial activity, all of them will delay healing. They all have a therapeutic ratio approaching 1. If someone could explain to me how one is appreciably better than the others, I'm all ears.

i use hydrogen peroxide to soak q-tips in before cleaning out my ears. that's it.

i use isopropyl rubbing alcohol for everythign from watering down to clean LCD's, to pouring on cuts/scrapes, to using as an aftershave.

the sting doesnt really bother me. it's kinda refreshing actually.

as far as ingrown toenails go (someone up there mentioned them...) i use an x-acto and a pair of needle nose pliars. cut the offending piece back as much as you can, and rip the rest out. pour alcohol over it, massage it into it, and put a band-aid on. no more ingrown toenail or infection in 1 day.

EDIT: if it's a big cut and i'm not into the whole alcohol on a major wound thing.. i use betadine. it's a good antiseptic, no sting, and no bubbles or prolonging healing.

Clean wound with soap/water and scrub well. Rinse thoroughly with water.
Flush/rinse any debris left with alcohol.
Dress. Let the wound breathe twice per day and re-flush with alcohol.
If need be close wound and apply super glue to keep it sealed.

<---NOT a doctor. But this is what I do unless the wound is severely gaping and requires strips/stiches or needs a better cleaning.

I always use rubbing alcohol.... the sting makes it feel like it's working. I use iodine too.

I use alcohol for small wounds and peroxide for large wounds. Mainly because alcohol hurts like a bitch.

Here's a good story for you all to call me a retard for:

I've had this blotch under my skin on my leg for about 6 months now. It's almost like a rash, but it isn't spreading and it doesn't itch. It's just... there. So I take a knife a few days ago, sterilize it with some 70% IPA and cut a line right down the middle of it. Poured some of the alcohol on it and it burned like a mofo. Dunno if it helped at all, but it was fun I guess
