I interviewed last week and was supposed to hear back by the end of last week. Is today too early to send a follow up email?

If you were supposed to hear by the end of last week, I'd give them no longer than late this week before pinging them. It kind of depends on the organization, I suppose, but showing a little enthusiasm is rarely construed as a negative thing, at least for employers that I would want to have.

I've always followed up by mail immediately after all interviews I've done since graduating college. It's worked 3 out of 4 times for me. IMO, its really easy to delete an email, but it seems like throwing a letter out takes more effort.

Having been on the hiring end many times, I'll toss paper just as fast as hit the delete key. What makes the difference to me, sometimes, is when I have to make a decision between two neck and neck candidates: all else equal, the more professional one wins and an email = paper letter. In fact, I'll probably get the electrons, but not the paper - too easy to get lost in the shuffle at a larger company. (I am usually one of the decision makers on the hiring end for technical positions in my area - B.S. and Ph.D. scientists).

Following up after an interview is for your own piece of mind. Rarely does it affect the actual hiring decision.

Seriously? You write like a 14 year old.

When I tell you we'll give you a call back in about a week and you don't hear back from me in that time frame, it means thank you for applying but best of luck to whatever you're doing, 'cause we ain't hiring you.

Now is fine. It is virtually unheard of (unless your email is very unprofessional) to lose getting a job because you asked what the status was once the timeframe they gave you has passed.

Not to be a downer but if you don't hear anything after today that isn't a great sign. I don't know why but companies are terrible with telling people thanks but no thanks.

I just called today on a position I was waiting on. I was told the decision would be made by last week originally. Hadn't heard anything so I called and was told they're still deciding and would let me know next week. The posting is still listed as active so that gives me a little hope. . ..

Follow up email? Your kidding right?

You need to follow up with a 1/2 gallon of vodka.

Go to the local liquor store, buy a $15 of cheap vodka, go to the place where you were interviewed, ask to speak to the person, then present him/her with the bottle.

Everyone loves cheap vodka, especially during the middle of the day and while at work.
