I've heard alot of rumor about 939 price increases.

I've to a 3200+ now @ 2.6 and I'd like to upgrade to a 165 or 170 whenever the price bottoms out, but of course before it begins to climb.

Thanks!

The 3200 at 2.6GHz is pretty fast in today's applications even compared to a Dual Core A64 at the same speed.

A more worthwile upgrade for you would be a Video Card and/or 2GB of Memory (If you're into games).

I'm gonna do 2gb of ram at the same time.

I do alot of RAW conversion. I'm not hitting the page file so RAM isn't going to make a heck of alot of difference, it's just easier to do it when you do the CPU so i've only gotta tweak the overclock once.

I don't game too much, I will upgrade sooner or later. I just don't wanna get nailed if the 939 Opty's dissappear or sky rocket in price.

EDIT: 1 Post! Welcome to AT!

I dont think going from single core A64 2600mhz to dual core A64 2600+ for $325 is worth it. Get a newer 16mb cache hard drive for $60-70 after MIR. Save the rest towards a new system build.

Again, The software I'm using isn't limited by my hard drive (I've already got a 16mb drive). What I really need is more processing power. I'm VERY often batch process 1000+ raw files to JPG. My current bottleneck is my CPU. The software I'm using will take advantage of 2 core's so I should see a sizable performance gain or be able to use my PC on one core while batch processing with the other. I'm confident that I'll be able to get a 165 or 170 up to at leasts 2600, likely more.

Between the new CPU and RAM (GPU in Future) I should see a sizable performance improvment.

My only question is when to buy? Will prices drop when AM2 is out or will they climb?

Well great. Most encoding apps support Dual Cores and Hyper threading. It may be worth it, in that case. But dont expect to see much of a difference in Windows operation and games.

The prices for S939 boards and processors will of course drop when AM2 comes around. AMD had a price drop just a few weeks ago. Don't bother with rumours. :)

I'm just worried AMD will increase prices to speed the move to AM2 or drop several product lines, like the optys.

Don't forget the used market. Plenty of people will be selling their 939 duals at AM2 launch. I'm *hoping* the sweet spot will be an X2 4400+ for under $250.00...
