When do I raise my chipset voltage?
Do i take the vcore reading from in the bios or cpu-z? both are different
whats the safe max vcore for opteron 170 on air.

temps are currently 50c load

Man i so want to get 2.6ghz but it seems i need a big jump in volts to get there

If you mean when you should raise your chipset voltage to mean the SB, I wouldn't unless you are really looking for the highest bus available and have some decent water or thermal to cool it.

As for the Vcore, add 10-15% to the base vcore and you should be fine. Most find that the returns after 10% are very small considering the extra voltage and heat produced. I would put the upper limit with decent air @ 1.48 to 1.55. Hope this helps.

Forgot, as for your temps, download cpu-z or Everest and see what temp reading that is giving you. The DC opty's run hotter due to all the cache, but that sounds just a little high to me...but I wouldn't say it's out of sight. The upper thermal limit is 65 I think for that chip, so you do have some headroom.

thanks

so you thing 1.55 v core is ok?

@ 2.4ghz it needs 1.475vcore

then

@ 2.5ghz it needs 1.525vcore

is this acceptable? I mean its a big jump in volts for 100mhz

where in cpu z does it give a temp reading? I cant see it.Im using speedfan for temps at the moment

i'd say just keep it at 2.4ghz, too much voltage would reduce the lifespan of your card.

to be safe keep the vcore close to 1.5v..alot people run 1.52v...so 1.53 would be my upper limit

1.55v is between .2-.25 over Opteron vcore at default...mines is 1.35 default so I personally felt my max vcore was 1.52v

I have found the opteron seem to really hit a wall...they overclock well with small vcore bump then really need a big jump to get anything more

my opteron 165..@2.4at 1.35vcore in bios, 2.5@ 1.41, 2.61@1.46...passed this I was not prime stable up to 1.54v for 2.7 so no more juice for me...create alot more heat as well

not worth the cpu.....

Sorry if im hijacking, but would that mean i could run my 1.525V P4 2.8C Northwoord at up to 1.67V safely? That seems like a lot of volts to me.
