When the pronunciation of multi letter acronyms goes too far

People are getting ridiculous when they try to pronounce EVERYTHING as a word. Things I've heard:

CRT - Curt
LCD - Elsie
SATA - Say-teh (this is quite common)
WYSIWYG - Wizzy Wig (common too)
ISDN - Is-Din
AOL - (hole without the h or maybe they really mean something else!)
USB - uss-bee
SCSI - Scuzzy (who doesn't say this though)
LPT - lipped
PS/2 pissed-two
VGA - vee-gah
SDRAM - ess-dram or ess-dee-ram
DDRAM - diddy-ram

My favorite (not computer) is psi - pissy.
your tires gots low pissy there
[sic] -M

"JPG/JPeg" as Jay Peg

That's how you're supposed to say those.

Never heard the others used phonetically.

Only weird one I've experienced was a teacher talking
about and "earl" address, somehow related to the internet.

I had to actually raise my hand and ask what the hell is that

Turned out to be URL

I would want to smack someone that pronounced NEC CRT as "neck curt".

Yeah after a good smackdown, their neck hurt. Best pun ever.

Lots of support folk do say EARL for URL.

GUI - Gooey

Anyways, most of those i haven't heard. Are these technical professionals that are pronouncing them?

SATA is pronounced as SAH-TAH here.

Did it take you a month++ to come up with that? ^^;

I do... i thought most people did. Always saying U-R-L would be a pain. I don't say it to callers/customers though, since they wouldn't understand. I say address in those cases.

SATA is pronounced as SAH-TAH here.

I think gooey is pretty standard

I needed a cool down period so you wouldn't write a letter to the owners explaining that I NEF around here too much.

A lot of thse could be the person pronouncing it normally but in the normal, clipped mode of speech. Diddy- and Dee-dee- can sound a lot alike, and you might be missing the -dee off of elsie-dee. And what's wrong with saying ess-dee-ram? Do you say arr-ay-em?

Also, scuzzy and wizzywig are standards. As are jay-peg (.jpg/.jpeg), jif/gif (.gif), ping (.png, although I say pee-en-jee)

And I say ess-ay-tee-ay, but I wouldn't get mad at somebody who said sah-tah.

I've heard people say SLASH ET-SEE for /etc. 😕

I used to piss off a friend of mine by pronouncing cout() and cin() as COOT and SIN. 😛

Edit: I know these aren't acronyms. 😉
