when the hell did firefox change refresh from F5?

Your keyboard appears to have those damned F-lock keys. Based on a picture at Techfreaks.org, F5 is marked "Open" which would explain why it's trying to open files.
Turn on your F-lock.

I believe f5 is soft refresh and ctrl-R is hard refresh (reloads cache). I could be wrong though.

Yes, F-Lock is evil. I'm used to using Alt-F4 to kill applications, and that never works when I first boot the computer because the damn default setting for F-Lock on Microsoft keyboards is off
