I'm looking at this menu, and the most expensive item happens to be what sounds really good to me (surprise, right). I don't want them to think that I'm ordering it just for the hell of ordering expensive food, but I don't want to get something I don't want either.

It's an $18 entree, fyi.

Make sure to also order things that do not come with the meal.

I ended up ordering the $18 steak and a Ceasar on the side.

I take my cue from the boss and order something within a few bucks of his/her entree

$18 != expensive (unless you're at KFC or something)

I can't believe this was even a question. I though you were contemplating a $60 steak or something.

I didn't say it was expensive, I said it was the most expensive thing on the menu.

I usually order something to the same cost of what the boss is getting. If he orders a beer, i'm getting a beer. etc. for appetizer, soup, salad, dessert...

So if everything on the menu is cheap, then what's the big deal about ordering the least cheap item?

If I take someone to Burger King, I don't get pissed if they order a double whopper or whatever.

I probably would have felt more normal if it was at a nice restaurant and I ordered something expensive, but it was like a little restaurant and most people were ordering $10 plates and mine cost over $20. It just felt a little weird.

Order whatever appeals to you.
I take clients out to nice restraurants all the time and they always pick the more expensive dishes, and that is fine with me.

When I am out with my department I always order whatever appeals to me. Restaurant choices are made based on price. I won't take my department out to eat at a $50/plate restaurant for lunch. I will take them to a $25/plate restaurant though.

I order whatever I feel like eating if it is within my per diem. I'm in Detroit right now, get $15 for breakfast, $15 for lunch, and $35 for dinner. Free breakfast in hotel, lunch usually $8, and every night I've been at about $30 for dinner. If they didn't want me to spend $35 for dinner, the per diem would be less right?

I remember my first "Business Dinner", I went a little over the top.. I was just out of school.. Probibly 23-24, it was my boss, his boss, another coworker, and myself. We went to this resturant in the... I think it was the Venician Hotel in Vegas.. Fancy-ish place, you could tell the "bosses boss" was trying to show off.. Anyway, everyone is ordering various beef, fish entrees etc, I ordered a Kobe Beef / Shrimp plate. Now, at the time I didnt even know what Kobe beef was.. I remembered hearing Howard Stern talking about how good it was, so I wanted to try it.

Needless to say, the dinner was phenominal.. Easily the best food I have had in awhile.. As we are walking out, my boss goes " You got a pair of balls on you ordering a $120 plate of food"

Doh ! I had no idea it cost so much.. I had the "womens" menu, so it just listed the dishes and not the prices. In the grand scheme of things it didnt matter, it just made me feel like an a$$ at the time being so young and green.

it is amazing how expensive food can be imo

very true - also something straight out of a what-not-to-do-during-an-interview book.

Great story. I'm still laughing. A Kobe Steak while they're sitting there with fish. I can only imagine what your boss was thinking.

$18 is not much for a lunch item. I routinely take out potential new hires for interview lunches and I'm told to keep it under $50 per person. Granted, I work for a huge law firm, but $18 is not much.

A client took a group of 4 of us out to lunch once and he got upset when I didn't order the biggest lunch, so I ordered more. He knew I was holding back. Get what you want, let the sissies order $5 sammiches and enjoy your steak!

When the company is paying for lunch it's a business tax writeoff.
I order whatever I feel that I want. I've never ordered food just because it was expensive.

in my experience most bosses tend to notice things that stand out...for good or bad

so if you are getting the 18 dollar plate and everyone else gets 5-10 stuff they will remember..trust me they remember even if they dont ever bring it up to you again....
