So you have a mirror to do this reflecting? I'm still looking for those mirrors. :) I'll check at WalMart. I'm going there to give the Republicans and Chinese more of my money. :) :) :)

Anyway, yeah you are right. Garrison Keillor was talking this morning on his program about how insignificant and replaceable we all are. A hard truth isn't it?

I'll just quote one of the sayings from the Recovery Community-

"Be careful what you pray for, you just might get it."

The law of unintended consequences being what it is... and the Diety apparently having an unpredictable sense of humor...

I've always wondered if it were a little patronizing and self engrandising to pray. "Lord, you know I like ya, right? Well, thing is, my dog just died and I just don't see how that fits into your grand design. Don't you think you went a little too far in this one? I mean I just got him house broken..."

80 mile solo ride? a training ride? Jesus. I did 100km on a rolling plain (the Thracian plain, if you want details) this summer, and I 'pWn3d" as the yung'uns say. I was just plain exhausted afterwards. Luckily I got to spent the next day on a hammock at the beach, drinking ouzo, rakia and other assorted liquors:)

But stick with your legs. They're better than 99% of the young legs out there ;)

Some of you may have heard the piece on BBC World News at 6 a.m. this morning regarding the Lutheran minister who prayed for his soccer team to win. This bit of news engendered a lively debate among religious folks, some of whom felt that there are some things that are too trivial to pray for.

When I heard the piece I was on my way to the General Van Fleet Trail for a solo 80 mile training ride and I got to thinking that maybe I should ask God for a new pair of legs. I'd like the pair Dave Scott had at age 28, thank you.

Is this request too trivial, or should I be praying for Kerry's election, or peace in Sudan, or that hunger be diminished in Bangladesh?

With only 5.5 days until the Duke iron distance race this has become a critical matter for me because I missed 8 weeks of really hard training thanks to FOUR FUSKING HURRICANES down here in VENUS, USA.

I mean, since God screwed up the weather, doesn't she owe me?
:)

did you ever watch that snl skit where this one lady would keep praying for the most trivial things? jesus (as played by phil hartman) arrives and tells her to stop praying so much because he has other important things to do. it was pretty funny.

Hehe, yup good skit. I used to be one of those and know many who were.

Hey chess9, I pray everyday, I pray for Bush in the bad times and maybe years down the road we might find out why we got Bush and maybe not, You can pray for anything you want but for most the Lords prayer is all you need, I pray that I don't live to be old. their is so much and so many to pray for and so much everyone can do, Break in your pocket and give to the people that need help, I do every month, Help the kids that can't help them selfs, I do, There are so many that has so much they should be thanking God every day, A person that has health family and friends doesn't need anything else

That's very good advice about giving to help others. I give quite a bit and it seems that the older I get the more I give. I don't mean to brag, but I donated over $18,000 last year alone, including an old car valued at $800 that I didn't want to sell but my wife insisted on me removing. :) And, no, I won't be donating to any of you rascals here. :)

My list of preferred donees:

1. American Lung Association;
2. Lance Armstrong Foundation;
3. NPR;
4. Jewish Community Center;
5. National Multiple Sclerosis Society

plus smaller amounts to some local charities including a homeless shelter for girls.

If I were Christian (obvious disclaimer there) I would refrain from praying for the reason I've offered above but would try to be as thankful as I could manage. Thankfullness is benign and postive, whereas prayer is greedy and presumptive...

That's just my opinion. I probably should have phrased that a little better, but take it for what its worth.

Actually, I probably have the legs of the average 40 year old, but Dave Scott's legs (at age 28) would be about twice as good. I'd like to win my age group ONCE. Is that so much for an old man to ask? :) What do I have to do, live to be a 100 to win once? :) :) :)

Good for you on the 60 miler. Keep it up and your body will ultimately thank you.

I took 4:48 minutes to do the 80 miler, so I'm not very fast. :)

prayer is bunk, asking a heavenly babysitter for all your worldly wishes....

if there is a positive effect as some zealots claim it comes from positive thinking that comes of praying.

How about miracles? To me, that's like the almighty being of the universe second guessing itself for the benefit of a man's conviction. That defies and undermines the concept of faith on so many levels its hard to comprehend.

Jesus Christ man, God meant for Gore to win. That's why he got the most votes in Florida. The Supreme Coup voted for the Devil, not God. You see what He did to Florida. for partial payback.

I prayed today that the people of this country don't re-elect W ... that's saying a lot, considering I'm sort of an agnostic. Frankly, I don't know what came over me...

The grim reaper, I'd say. I am generally done for after 40-45km.
