Politically I generally lean toward the left, but several incidents of the past few weeks really struck home to me how i felt about Ayn Rands writings.

To sum up Ayn Rand simply is to say, she believes in Capitalism, not as it's practiced in america but as it is described in theory. those who work hard and innovatively get the appropriate reward. those who choose not to work get what they deserve.

Lately in america we are becoming a society of victims. there is nothing more UNAMERICAN that a society of victims. this and that caused me to be such and such therefore it's not my fault.

I am SOOOO sick of Victims. All of us face difficulties. all of us have problems in our lives. those arent the things that makes us victims. What does is the attitude that those difficulties determine what we do with our lives. THEY DON'T. WE DO.

anyway, Liberal or Conservative, let's all pledge not to be victims but to CHOOSE our own destinies.

We can't choose what happens to use, but we can choose how we respond to it.

anyway, sorry about the rant.

You're right. The thing that really pisses me off is the culture of irresponsibility here. No one takes responsibility for their own actions...

I used to be a big Ayn Rand/Objectivist fan, but that's trailed off quite a bit. While I agree with her views of the individual being superior to the collective, her belief in complete selfishness is a little impractical in our world. Reading her work can be liberating, but deep down there seems to be a hollow core. I suppose there isn't enough compassion in Objectivism. It's every-man-for-himself taken to the extreme.

Victimization? It's hard to say you are against a "society of victims" if you haven't been in the shoes of the worst-off members of society. For example, I cannot imagine being born black and poor, in a crime-ridden and despair-filled inner city ghetto, with a crackhead mother and an incarcerated father. That's a victim. That's somebody who will face almost insurmountable odds to ever become well off in life, short of external intervention.

You cannot use victimization as an excuse for errors of personal judgement, but not everybody is afforded a fair shot at success in life. We do not want equality of outcomes, but we need to provide equality of opportunity.

Your post aggravates my post-traumatic-stress-induced-seasonal-inner city rage-monthly-my mommy didn't hug me enough and daddy hugged me too much-attention deficit-technofear.

Who do I sue?

Not you, I think you only posted it in a fit of medication-induced, temperment-impared, cyber rage.

I think I'll sue the Taliban, and since they can't pay I'll ask the taxpayers to pick up the tab... its my right!!!

I'll attest to that...I LIVE that life, or at least I used to. I was born in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, in a studio apartment that housed 6 people. I was born to Haitian immigrants, and we lived from check to check on minimum wage-myself, my mom, dad, uncle, cousin, little brother. I am of course, black. Now, my dad has an awesome job with the United States Department of Transportation as a Regional Supervisor, and we live pretty good now...but we still have our hardships... ANYONE that tells me everyone has the same fair shot, is a farxing liar. I'm not going to call myself and my family victims, but we sure got dealt a crappy hand. But you can play it well if you work at it, and that's why America rules. Now, since I have no political knowledge whatsoever, I'm going to go nef elsewhere...flame away, boys...

Hey, avoiding responsibility is just part and parcel of society's obsession with making everything in life more and more convenient.
Still waiting on AI to do all the thinking and feeling for humanity too!

xero940,

We all do not start out life with the same hand. But we all have the same chances to improve our life. Just because you start life poor, it does not mean you have to stay poor.

haha, if being angry about people who don't take responsibility for their actions would make democrats angry, then their whole party would collapse, because the basis for their whole party and belief system is people NOT having to be responsible for their problems.

I know that...in fact, that's exactly what I said:

<<I'm not going to call myself and my family victims, but we sure got dealt a crappy hand. But you can play it well if you work at it, and that's why America rules.>>

Remember that?

PlatinumGold, glad to hear of your move to the right. Let me give you a little more food for thought to inch you farther along. Who do you think did more for humanity, Mother Teresa or Michael Milken? Why are our entrepreneurs not regarded more highly in this country? Who is more responsible for where this country is today, the average worker or the business developer? I'll give you a hint. What does this country, or the World for that matter, need more of right now, grunts or businesses? Workers or jobs? Laborers or Corporations?

The thing that pisses me off is the way we hobble our businesses with regulations, red tape, taxes, hiring quotas, lawsuits... DAMN! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! :|
