When nvidia gets to the 9 series...

It's kind of crazy to think I've been through that many generations of these things. And as of this week I've owned one of each (save for the 8's I guess, but it won't be long...).

And just two days ago I picked up a used PCI FX5200 to drive a third monitor.
I don't think I've ever owned an ATI card.

9800 will probably be the last video card nVidia will make, try and make the most of it. Its been a good run, TNT2, ah the memories.

After the next generation, Intel, AMD/ATI are going core-integrated. No standalone video card would be able to compete with that kind of link. It's also likely going to be a general architecture, so it might not be accurate to say there's still going to be a GPU, more like a CPU with very good graphics rendering capabilities.
Whatever it is nVidia is going to do, it's not going to be your everyday PCIe... unless they decide to drop the high-end. But even a mainstream GPU won't be cost effective at that point it seems.
Don't be so sure Fusion and similar ideas will be successful right off the bat.
With that said, I think it's ashame NVIDIA ever moved to an xxxx naming scheme in the first place. They had the right idea with GeForce 1/2/3/4, they should've continued it with 5/6/7/8, then there would be no problem having a GeForce 10/11/12, and they wouldn't be forced to switch naming schemes like ATI was after the 9800.

The sad part is that I still have most of them around here somewhere. The GeForce 4 4200 fried itself though, all the others still work.
edit: I've had a couple of ATi cards. Each one has nearly been flung from the house in a fit a of rage over the drivers. I've just had back luck with them so I don't even consider them an option anymore.

9800 is still an amazing card, IMO. Yeah, sure, it won't play rainbow 6 at the highest settings, but I think I'm fine with that especially considering how long I've had it.

I remember when I first got my Voodoo 3 16 MB PCI card...it was absolutely awesome in Half-Life compared to software mode. I believe I used OpenGL.

You're missing out. My last Nvidia card was my Geforce 2 GTS. I upgraded from that to a Radeon 9600 Pro. I was going to get the Geforce 7600 when I upgraded to Core 2 Duo and PCI-E but I decided to get a Radeon x1650XT instead since I heard how bad Nvidia's Vista drivers were. It's a good thing I did too since ATI's Vista drivers are working great right now.
I did have most of the Voodoo series as well.
