When my Brita instructions says to wash with mild detergent...

I don't know if I would feel comfortable cleaning something that I would drink out of with laundry detergent. What kind of plain old soap, can I do use dish washing soap?

Dish washing soap is fine.

Bleach is actually fine and safe to use if you rinse well afterward, but soap should work well in this case.

Since I have two big jugs of bleach that I haven't touched yet, how much bleach would you recommend for the pitcher?

Follow directions for "Dishes, ..." under "For Sanitizing".
If you can't read the image, just look on the container itself. They usually provide directions on sanitizing use.

The instructions says it not dishwasher safe, but I'll throw it with the rest of my laundry. I would assume air-dry would be good also?

I would tend to assume he meant the "delicates" cycle of the dishwasher...

In my book,

Do not wash in dishwasher

+

Mild detergent

= hand wash with dish soap

not: dump into (edit: clothes) washing machine with "mild detergent" 🙂

At the cottage we used to pour a couple bottles of javex into the water supply to "treat" it as it was just pumped from the lake. We brushed our teeth and what not with it, I even drinked it a few times (thought it did not test very good. A fishy javexy kinda taste). Javex is fairly safe to drink in very small concentrations, it's pretty much what the city puts in the water supply. OR more specifically, chlorine. (I think javex is almost all chlorine)

I just washed my Brita with water and a clean rag though, to avoid any soapy taste.

You can also just go in a lake in a Darth Vader suit and wash it that way.
