Damn, with an intake temperature of 67F, driving up the hill in 2nd gear results in a LOD of between 75-85 according to the Scan Gauge. LOD being "load" so that would mean that going up the hill in 2nd gear with a VX transmission may result not only in me having the accelerator clear to the floor but that I'd possibly lose speed and consequently have to shift into 1st gear..

Well, good luck with that. I'd rather just buy a another car. The first gen Insights are fairly cheap now.
Well $10K is just too much and the point of me buying THIS civic was to have a practical 4 door car that looks nice and gets decent mileage. I really want that HX engine in there badly but the more I think about it, the more I feel like I won't be able to do it. Anyway my guess is it'll be at least a year from now before I attempt the engine swap but who knows... If I can get my current car to 50mpg on the commute to the gym with the use of the transmission swap and a few other modifications, then the engine swap will become a much lower priority because I won't feel so "rushed".

Why don't you just join a gym closer to home? Or go running or cycling from your house? Or buy a set of weights if you're into weight training?

You know, if this moron is really this determined to do this....by all means he should.

There's only about 150 ways to destroy his car by messing something up putting the transmission back in.

He called this a cakewalk....lmao. The extent of his car experience seems to be inflating tires to sidewall, hahaha

I'm guessing you've experienced 4 or 5 of those?

I don't understand, can you not visualize the swap or something???

You're the second person I've heard say such a stupid statement! First of all, the transmission I'm swapping it out with happens to be a transmission made by Honda. Secondly the DX/LX civic weren't designed for maximum fuel economy like the CX/VX were which I WHY I would swap in the CX/VX transmission for this. That same stupid logic could be applied to a person wanting to swap a DX/LX transmission into an EX Civic.

There is more to the CX/VX being built for fuel economy than the transmission; the VX doesn't have A/C or power anything and is the lightest, for example.

There's a half mile hill you go on often that can put a 70% load on your engine in second?

There's some local kid here that converted his Civic (Del Sol?) over to either fully electric or hybrid electric using some kind of kit. I don't know the details or how hard it was, but I've heard he's doing fairly well and gets excellent fuel economy.

Something like that would be far more effective than a tranny swap for taller gears, AND way cooler.

Swapping a transmission over a hill that in his short commute to the gym? Wow. I'm guessing he's planning on living in his parents basement for a long time.

You are retarded.
My main goal is to have a car that averages 50mpg when commuting to my gym. Once I achieve that goal, I'll be able to start going to the gym again.
Hot damn, son, you are retarded. Man, I've heard some crazy ass lame excuses for not working out before but because you want to get better gas mileage on the way to the gym is really the best one I've heard. I actually think you are mentally ill/maladjusted, not just from this thread but from others, too.

when you replace the word "engine" with the words "his legs", you will understand.

oh oh we're sorry...we forgot you live above ground level. we'll be sure to note the distinction.

seriously - swapping the transmission to gain a few mpg on a hill? that's retarded beyond all reason. it's an infinitely worse return over buying a hybrid car instead of an econobox for a few thousand less.

I think he's swapping the transmission to gain mpg overall, but is concerned about the ability of his hamster-wheel motor to propel the vehicle up the hill in 2nd gear.

On the way to the gym. At 50MPG.

....wtf.

If you film the swap I'll BUY a copy, and I think most of the folks here would too. We all know what a clusterfuk it will be and enjoy watching train wrecks.

You're in no position to be saying who is the airhead. The thread is about swapping transmissions with the former having shorter gearing, therefore a better chance of climbing a hill vs. the latter transmission having taller gearing and therefore a worse chance of climbing a hill. The transmission that comes with the car can't climb the hill in 3rd gear (maybe it can if I have it revved to its peak torque) but CAN do it fairly easily in 2nd gear. Yes I'm aware I can ascend the hill in 1st gear, but the better question is, if I put in this "new" transmission, will I still be able to ascend the hill in 2nd gear?

I don't know, but I'm going to try and find out by doing some calculations and get some insight by someone with something more than snarky comments.

Everything is relative, some people consider 20mpg "good" I consider it "awful" some consider 40mpg "amazing" I consider it "ok"... It isn't THAT loud but it's definitely unnecessarily loud especially considering that all I'm doing is cruising.. Also I happen to have an exhaust system on this car (came with it) so it tends to amplify certain RPM ranges.. Anyway a hell of a lot more air is being sucked into the engine and consequently being burned at 2600rpm than at 2100rpm. If I want to accelerate, I could always shift into 4th gear and that would still have a lower rev (about 100rpm less) than when I'm in 5th gear.

To give you an idea of how I drive in the city, I typically go 1st->2nd->4th(20mph)->5th(25mph). The annoying part about city driving is that I find myself needing to shift while in the middle of the intersection.

You go into 4th @ 20 mph and 5th @ 25? Why? On my car (2002 Forester), I'd be bucking pretty good, and have very little power. Whats wrong in shifting in the middle of an intersection? I think in Drivers Ed they dont like that, but I dont see the big deal in that.

Have you ever considered using first to gain speed going up the hill, and going into second on the way up? This works for me on long hills.....but it's second and third.

And 5th gear at 25.....wtf. My car would be bucking and shit all over the road....And I know for a fact that you don't have much more power than I do, if you can't make it up a hill in 2nd gear, lmao.

My truck has 325lb-ft and isn't in 5th gear at 25mph. I would hate to be behind him at an intersection. Any earth-friendly gas savings he manages through his creeping to 25mph would be more than offset when I pass him at WOT in first gear...

I'm almost in tears laughing at this one. Of any fleabag thread, this, combined with the responses, truly takes it.
