when it says "strictly less than 4 pages"

It means you can have 4 full pages of text. If you have any text on the 5th page you went over. A page isn't an interger unit so less the 4 includes 3.0, 3.5 or even 3.99999....

*Waits patiently for someone to ask if 3.99999... is the same as 4.*

Does it matter when the number of characters you can type is discrete?

How the hell can "strictly less than four pages" be construed to mean "you can have 4 full pages of text"? :disgust:

The answer is, it can't!

OP, if the prof or teacher wanted you to write 4 pages or less, they would have instructed you to "write 4 pages or less"!!!

The highest amount that is "strictly less than 4 pages" is 3 pages!!

Why else would the instuctor use the word "strictly"?

think it means less than 4 pages. strictly less than four even. so if you turn in four pages of writing, that is TOO much, seeing as that is not less than four, which they hint at wanting

those instructions are so confusing...

I'm in the group that would consider it to mean less than four full pages, meaning that I believe you could turn in three and a half or three and a quarter and still be fine.

The way I see it, if the professor hadn't wanted to give the option of going over three pages at all, he/she would've said "strictly 3 pages or less" or "no more than 3 pages."

Its amazing how much controversy such a simple statement causes...But I see where everyone's getting at.. If your teacher gives you crap for writing more than 3 (even if less than 4, anywhere from 3-3.9) , just direct her to this thread 🙂

My thoughts too.. No more than 3 = 3 or less , "strictly less than 4" = up to 3.9
