It means you can have 4 full pages of text. If you have any text on the 5th page you went over. A page isn't an interger unit so less the 4 includes 3.0, 3.5 or even 3.99999....

The answer is, it can't!

OP, if the prof or teacher wanted you to write 4 pages or less, they would have instructed you to "write 4 pages or less"!!!

The highest amount that is "strictly less than 4 pages" is 3 pages!!

Why else would the instuctor use the word "strictly"? :shocked:

I'm in the group that would consider it to mean less than four full pages, meaning that I believe you could turn in three and a half or three and a quarter and still be fine.

The way I see it, if the professor hadn't wanted to give the option of going over three pages at all, he/she would've said "strictly 3 pages or less" or "no more than 3 pages."

Its amazing how much controversy such a simple statement causes...But I see where everyone's getting at.. If your teacher gives you crap for writing more than 3 (even if less than 4, anywhere from 3-3.9) , just direct her to this thread

Something less than 4 pages is 3 FULL pages + less than 1 FULL page. So 3.9 pages are fine.
