I was also limited by the fact that my doorways are 30 inches wide which limited what I could physically get into my home. That made me go up another $200 or so. This one does have an ice maker though. Does anyone have experience installing them (hosing etc) that can give me some pointers?

pay lowes to do it for you, as well as remove and dispose of your old fridge

I am paying them to deliver and install the new one as well as take the old one, however the ice maker deal seems pretty simple and wanted to give it a shot myself

They put ice and water dispenser on almost all the fridges I have seen when I went shopping last year. Maybe 2 years ago. A side by side typically costs around 800-1,000. I like having the Ice and Filtered water.

Probably any plumber can install the water hose. In some locations it requires more than a saddle valve. You have to know the laws for your location. The average handyman can get it working properly.

I think he is asking how to run the water line to the fridge. If he does not have a water line to the fridge then he will have to tap into a cold water pipe in the house and run it to the fridge. For soem that is easy if near a pipe and it has a switch to turn it off and some are major pains that are not worth the time unless you use it alot.

If it cost ~$1000 to fix the fridge...why not just get a new one?

Yea, you can get a brand new stainless clad one for a grand or a regular white for for about $500.

Unless it's a Subzero or something don't bother replacing the compressor.

Have you priced refridgerators lately? Decent ones are at least in the $1000-$1800 range.

What kind of fridge do you consider "decent"?

Something side-by-side with in door ice/water, a decent compressor rating, and 25 cubic feet or more.

I love Lowes they do give good service. Home Depot sucks, the employees are rude and the managers are arrogant assholes who don't care about anything.

Okay, I've got you all beat. This month we had a water leak in the wall behind our kitchen cabinets. They had to remove half our kitchen cabinets including the kitchen sink, the dishwasher and the stove. We won't have a kitchen for about another month or so.

On top of that, my wife is a Realtor and hasn't sold anything in months so we are pretty much out of money and it's not looking like the real estate market is going to pick up anytime soon. Oh, and she can't take a job because she has to drop our son off at school at 9:45 AM and pick him up by no later than 5PM.

Then a few weeks ago my Dad had a heart attack requiring bypass surgery so I had to fly out to NY for a week because I wanted to see him before he went under the knife (he's not in good shape and we were worried that he might not make it).

Oh, and my Mom's husband had open heart surgery today to replace a bad valve. He's in ICU right now recovering.

It's been a rough year...

Edit-I'm looking at the positives though. My Dad is still alive and seems to want to make some changes in his life for the better, my Step-Dad is out of surgery and doing well, we are getting a new kitchen, and hopefully the real estate market will pick up next year.

There's one small dent in the door and I don't even notice it.

That's where I go for new appliances. That place rocks.

I've been using the fridge I bought at a used appliance store for five years... it cost me $150 and has water and ice in the door. 22 cubic feet.
