When it comes to pc fans, bigger IS better.

Forget the 80mm fan, I laugh in it's 5 bladed face.
92mm? Yah, if that's all that will fit your heatsink.
120mm? Now we're talking, but is bigger available. Woo Woo
127mm Papst = 5 inches
135mm = 5.4 inches
150mm! = 5.9 inches
Not big enough, you say?
172mm
Enough, already.
Of course you wouldn't run these at their default RPM, but I wonder what they'd be like with a fan controller, assuming a controller can handle it.

I'd like to try the 135mm which can drop to 6 volts and is just a little bigger than the 120.

Yah, I know, I'd have to carve a hole in the case, but I've cut blow holes in the top panel before.

172 will never have comp application, its 50mm thick, that definately takes away, the 150... i wouldnt mind looking into that tho

The problem with taking a powerhouse fan like these and slowing them down is you're still using a motor that is way more than you need. If these fan designers had a 150mm fan with a smaller motor so there's more blade and less center motor you could move more air at a lower speed. Maybe someone will take the hint. Yah, right.

interesting. i wonder if you can mod some of the cases to accomodate these fans.

What's the width of the average ATX case? I measure an outside dimension of about 8 inches. It would seem a 150mm fan which is 5.9 inches would fit.
Hey, who would prefer a pedestal fan over a ceiling fan that's quieter and moves more air.

Cost? A fan with a slower rotation needs less precision with balancing the blades, no?
I rest my case.
Actually, I go to eat dinner.

Some PSUs actually have 140mm fans for ventilation... I think Coolmax makes one and so does Superflower/TTGI..

I'd love to see what Silent PC Review has to say about those.. (They haven't reviewed those though).

I've done some research on Papst's fans and I must agree with bupkus' notion that bigger is better when it comes to fan size. Some might disagree as larger fans do tend to be louder with same rotational speeds but you have to keep in mind that they don't have to rotate with great number of rounds per minute to keep air flow high. Also, smaller fans generate higher-pitched noise that's IMHO more annoying than lower-pitched sound of bigger fans. Independant studies support this theory as higher-pitched noise distracts people more than does lower-pitched. So - if you have room for bigger fans in your PC case - go for it! Your PC will be cooler and noise levels (even though Bells levels could be higher) would be more tolerable 😎

Best to all :cookie:, also check my "enormeous fan" idea :light: and give your input at my thread Why doesn't somebody create a 36"+ fan side-pannel mod?

There's Something About Fans

MyK Von DyK: You heard of this thing, the 6" Papst fan?
bupkus: Yeah, sure, 6" fan. Yeah, the case cooling thing.
MyK Von DyK: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 36... inch... fan.
bupkus: Right. Yes. OK, alright. I see where you're going.
MyK Von DyK: Think about it. You walk into a computer store, you see a 6 inch fan sittin' there, there's a 36 inch fan right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
bupkus: I would go for the 36.
MyK Von DyK: Bingo, man, bingo. 36 inch fans. And we guarantee better cooling than the 6" fan.
bupkus: You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
MyK Von DyK: If you're not happy with 36 inchs, we're gonna send you another inch free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
bupkus: That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with a 46" fan. Then you're in trouble, huh?
[MyK Von DyK convulses]
MyK Von DyK: No! No, no, not 46! I said 36. Nobody's comin' up with 46. Who can fit 46"s? You won't even get your blades goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
bupkus: That - good point.
MyK Von DyK: 36 is the key number here. Think about it. 36-Elevens. 36 doors. 36, man, that's the number. 36 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
bupkus: Why?
MyK Von DyK: 'Cause you're fvckin' fired! 🙂😉

doesn't fit in a sonata type case.. its pointless. not worth the effort

True, it would be pointless since the Sonata comes with a 120mm fan but I have a couple older Antec TOWERS with 2-80mm fan brackets in the back and these babies are too good to relegate to low end hardware. I've already cut a 92mm hole in the top panel of one which is still making some noise at the lower rpm's. The other I'd like to top off with a big 'sucker'.

I'm very pleased in my late night shopping at newegg that Irwin has several mATX mini-towers that come with a PSU with a huge fan and a fan vent in the rear panel for what may be a 120mm fan. Hey, it was late and I forgot what the exact numbers were.

Mostly, a 135mm fan is for head cases like me (yah, you know who you are😉) who just want to do a "Toolman" kind of upgrade.
EDIT: Wow, I just realized, if I use a fan larger than 120mm just where on the earth am I gonna get a "finger saver" wired cover? DEAD. 🙁 unless... "notin gonna hold me down, uh uh, no no..."
