Wrong forum! Move requested. OK - it's moved. So, will the Moto X be terminal? That is my next planned upgrade. :)

When you try out a new phone and it isn't that much more fluid than your current phone.

Yeah, I figure my MotoX will last like 10 years.

As hardware gets beefier, software expands to push it.

Current flagships are probably good for two years easily and likely longer, but 10 years (i know, hyperbole) on, we'll have a whole new ball game.

I'm hoping to go at least three years with my Nexus 5.

I dunno. I mean, my old ipod touch 4g I could feel it being slow, but the ipod touch 5g with A5 is pretty much fast enough. I don't see the apps being used changing dramatically. All of the really creative stuff has already been done with the accelerometer and enhanced reality stuff.

The only thing that I really want is for phones to get thinner and with better battery life. I want them to be like ipod touch 5g thin, which is the thinnest, best battery life device I've ever used.

I've already quit but the 1+1 has me interested enough to follow the information releases. But if it's not the be-all-end-all phone then my GS4 will last me another two years I'd imagine.

I hope I didn't get you hooked there ;)

But TBH they weren't even on my radar til yesterday. I thought it was just another Oppo, Pantech, blah blah blah, but the more I read the more I'm impressed. Even if it's not the perfect phone everyone wanted, they've been more transparent in the design process than anyone could ask for. If it turns out as good as it does on paper, then I'm fairly impressed.

Yes, yes you did =P

And I pretty much have the exact same experience. It's actually pretty exciting that something like this is being attempted. Nonetheless, it'll have be the final result that convinces me.

I don't really plan my upgrades. I just do it when I need to. I don't know when I'm going to upgrade my moto x but I know it's going to be a while. I would still have my Nexus 4 if the battery life wasn't so undependable. Whenever my phones no longer do what I need them to do is when I move on. But if all goes well I plan on keeping my moto x for at least another year or two.

In the very recent face of Project Tango, you're fairly short-sighted.

Just look at where Android and iOS were 3 years ago. We've already had a massive sea change in our phone's software, and it wouldn't have been possible without more powerful hardware.

These phones will easily feel good for the entire duration of a mobile contract, I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying that expecting more than 3 or 4 years might not be a reasonable expectation.

I think the time to get phones via subsidy is done for with me. Once my S4 contract is up I will go prepaid and if I want to replace the S4 I will buy something full price. There is way more value for off contract phones these days.

When is time? when there's enough features to make it worthwhile OR I broke/lost something. If I were to base my upgrades on functionality I could still rocking my StarTac from '97... or was that '96?

i think my galaxy s4 is going to last me at least another 2 years. I don't think anything else out there is compelling enough to make me switch. The new Sony's are really nice but not nice enough to switch when my device is perfectly more than adequate

I should add that I was talking purely hardware, there. If you're on a subsidized contract (Sprint, Verizon, ATT in US), your time to upgrade is when the contract is up. Unless you like giving your provider free money on top of paying them for service, because hardware costs are baked into your rates. If you're not upgrading, you're overpaying for your hardware.

Obviously a couple months while you wait for that new phone go into consideration, but you should be upgrading regularly.

Note 3 is everything I want in a phone for now and the foreseeable future.

For me, I just realize there's nothing more that I want or need a phone to do than the Note 3.

But of course I do look forward to whatever device that comes along that will somehow make me lust for it enough to ditch the N3. Haven't seen it yet, but I welcome whatever advance in tech/forward design/pure awesomeness that will eventually come along and do the trick.

I just wait for the upgrade itch to hit me. I know that sometime in the next few years a manufacturer is going to come out with a feature I just have to try. I'm good with my iphone 5s for the foreseeable future as things stand right now. It's the unforeseeable part of the future that always prompts an upgrade for me though. Also, verizon is the only carrier that has decent coverage around here. They charge the same for service whether I buy the phone outright or not, so I might as well use my upgrades when something I want comes out.

I think this thread is very from the perspective of Android users.

iOS has an OBVIOUS huge update coming in a larger screen. A 5 inch iPhone will shatter consumer device sales records given the pent-up demand. Even some 5s's would be upgraded.

Windows Phone is starting to mature with newer hardware and updates. Maybe sometime this year they can release THE cameraphone without the slow speeds their previous models had.
