To the person who said the quality of napster isn't good that depends highly on the bit rate of the song you download.
For example, a song I really I would definitely download it with a bit rate of nothing less that 256kbp, whereas some songs CAN sound good or descent with 128kbps.
That's cable Internet access for you ;)

Napster has saved me from the one hit wonder.. I hated nothin more than too buy a new disk only to find one good song and a bunch of stuff my kids could come up with. If its good and the artist is talented I will still buy the whole disk to hear the lesser known titles not found on napster. I'm tired of being force fed music some panel of excutives thought was good. Things need to change. In reallity I had already stopped purchasing new music a couple years ago just because of this. These chumps are making way to much money and holding back alot of really good musicians because they dont like the sound or its not "radio" music or MTVable. Live long napster and dont anyone let whats been started fade away. With or without napster the companys need stopped

It depends on a whole lot more than the bitrate. You can download a 320kbps mp3, but if it's encoded with a substandard mp3 encoder such as Xing, the sound is going to be horribly mutilated from what it was originally supposed to sound like. True enough cd-quality mp3's are very possible with the proper encoding/ripping tools (i.e. EAC and LAME 3.87 VBR) but most people don't know the first thing about using these tools as they aren't as common as the Xing encoder, Fraunhaufer codec, or some of the rippers such as AudioGrabber and MusicMatch.

It would be really nice if you could know what people used to encode sometihng before you download it.

I generally buy 2-10 CDs a month, sometimes more. Yesterday I bought Van Halen (self titled album) and Nina Gordon's "tonight and the rest of my life." I like to replace albums i previously owned and also buy the new stuff too.

Last week. There are only two or three bands that I buy regularly. The rest of it are Napstered. Who wants to buy a full CD for the one hit wondergroups?
What a waste.

I buy DVD's.

CDs are old skool :)
actually, I still buy CDs even though I have broadband. Napster and such servers are only for those individual songs that I like but would never buy the CD for anyway. So in this case, the music industry isn't exactly losing any money because of my behavior.

At least 7-8 years!!! I bought a few CDs when I was in high school. The money I saved on CDs was 'well spent' on PC upgrades :)

3 years ago when I had to do a school project involving music. Back then I didn't have a CD burner nor reliable source for getting MP3s. Oh, how things have changed...
