When is the DDR2 going to get cheaper?

I'm waiting for the days when 2x4gb of g skill ram is going to be going for less than $50 a pop all the time.

Near future?

4GB sticks are expensive to make and considering the market is beginning to shift to DDR3; the future would show prices to go up when DDR2 becomes obsolete just like the DDR to DDR2 switch.

I'm seeing a slightly upward trend in DDR2 pricing here, though that could very well be due to our dollar jumping all over.

I agree with Quiksilver; it's unlikely to get any cheaper as DDR3 is where everything is headed.

While it may go up a bit, I doubt it will stay for longer. In a few years time, DDR3 should be taking over as the standard and DDR2 will plummit for a few months to get that stock out. Then they end up in DDR price territory.

It has been selling for less than it costs to make it: they cranked out a bunch of it because Vista needed a lot of memory; but, lots of people did not want Vista.

And, check out regular DDR memory prices: about twice what DDR2 is, since much less is being made, and, there is still demand from people with older systems.

We have been spoiled by really cheap RAM....being able to buy it for less than it costs to make it is not sustainable.

Yep, when you get vast supply outweighing demand and the economic downturn this past year, you get crazy cheap ram prices. I'm not sure about DDR2 prices going down again like this later on. Once/if supply runs low because everyone is making/buying DDR3, there is no incentive for DDR2 to be selling below cost like it has been.

i agree, DDR2 already hit and passed its lowpoint, it now goes up in price as people still need it, but very few manufacture it. and the manufacturing is done in small quantities (since demand is low).

yes, qimoda filed for bankruptcy, they claimed it was a crazy price war that made them sell at a loss (or not sell at all, they made too much).
If you didn't know, qimoda is one of the only 5 companies in the world to actually make the ram chips.

I got 2 x 2GB crucial DDR2 1066/1.8v for about $30 A/R at Fry's.

I felt guilty.

I got them anyway.

Yeah. Six months ago, I was paying around $20 for a 2x2 after rebate (Crucial). I just bought what I think is my last DDR2 purchase last week on a Newegg sale. About $10 a gigabyte for Kingston DDR2 800. All of my DDR2 servers are at 8 GB, which is all they'll hold, and all my desktops are at 4 GB, which is all I'll have need for with those motherboards.

Sure, there will be some ups and downs and occasional sales, especially for stuff that isn't mainstream (2.1 and 2.1 Volt) and they want to drop their inventory. But for "standard" 1.8 volt DDR2 modules, I only expect them to go up from this point.
