When is Palm going to update their flagship phone?

It's been one year since the Pre came out and that was announced in January of 2009. Are they just giving up like that? I heard new management doesn't care about smartphones but this lag is awful.

Not sure if you heard...HP bought Palm...so it might be a little while.

I'm sure Palm was working on a new phone before HP bought them, and I doubt HP completely scrapped whatever they were working on. I think we'll see something by the end of 2010.

That's a long time in the phone business. Their phones may be even further behind. It's not like Apple, Microsoft, and Google are standing still waiting to see what Palm will do.

I didn't say I approved of their timeline.

Palm needs to get something out (or at least something impressive announced) before Windows Phone 7 is released. Between the new iPhone, Android's current surge, the continuing dominance of RIM, and then WP7...there won't be a whole lot of room for the Pre.

The Pre Plus?

Hardly. Slight keyboard layout modification (iirc), and more ram. That's pretty much all the Pre Plus is.

Personally, I'd like a landscape slider, faster stock processor and, most importantly, better build quality.

I'm going to have some hard decisions to make come December. I really like WebOS, but I also love my Zune and I'm kinda excited to see how WP7 pans out. If Palm hasn't released new hardware by then, I'm definitely jumping ship.

From what I've read, that extra RAM make a pretty big difference in the Pre Plus's responsiveness and UI. But, yeah, its basically the same phone. I'm not a fan of portrait keyboards, slider or virtual, myself. My few experiences with WebOS have been positive, but with HP owning them now, I wouldn't hold my breathe for a device that isn't a POS.

It definitely does. Tack on the 800Mhz kernel patch and the Pre+'s performance screams compared to the original. However my biggest complaint, by far, is the build quality/poor QA.

I'm already on my 2nd Sprint Pre, and my wife's is constantly rebooting (and hers isn't preware'd)...so I think it's yet again a hardware issue. It's really unacceptable.

T-Mobile has a 4G network? I can believe 4.3in and physical keyboard, but 4G claims sound fishy.

T-Mobile is claiming "4G speeds" on their HSPA+ network. And in real world tests, their HSPA+ network is beating Sprint's WiMax network, so while nerds will squabble about technologies used, in reality, they are achieving today's 4G speeds.

Is HSPA+ the standard/speed that AT&T has claimed to be rolling out this year?

T-Mobile is in the process of rolling out 21MBps HSPA+ (and already has to major areas in the Northeast). AT&T is currently 7.2, and according to the most recent Engadget article on the subject, they're going to be upgraded to 14.4.
