I am jsut curious when its legit to swear in the office. I heard one of the managers swear when something was definitely f'd up and sometimes I hear him swear when just conversating with an engineer. When is it cool to swear? hmmmmm....

My network tech. had the f-bomb dropped on him a few times by an engineer because the engineer screwed up a large format scanner. I don't think I've never had anyone say it to me, though.

I talk normally with my coworkers, but I don't swear when talking to anyone outside my team.

At work it sounds like a bunch of sailors work there. We also joke and laugh and all of that kind of good stuff. Granted I don't work in an office, but I see no reason to treat your coworkers as these sterile, inhuman beings.

The three of us in the office just ate barbecue, drank a 12 pack and cursed like sailors for lunch, then we went up to the roof and watched the Navy flybys for fleet week.

So yeah, cursing in the office isn't really a big deal.

i don't think it's cool when you do it loud enough for the everyone to hear, especially when you have clients walking around. you make an ass out of youself and the company.

It largely depends on the environment of your workplace. At my last job my boss cursed like a sailor, and at my new job, it isn't an issue either. That being said, don't be that guy that drops the f-bomb every other word, you'll just sound stupid!

I'd say it depends on your coworkers and the atmosphere of the office. Where I work, as long as you aren't really around upper management, nobody cares, so it's best to keep it professional around them.

At my old job we had a swear jar, and I'd just drop a $10 in there on monday morning to cover me for at least part of the week.

When you're not around one of your superiors, it's fine. If you are around one of your superiors, depends on whether they swear in the office. Either way it's not terribly professional. If you're a professional, you ought to be able to express yourself using proper English.

In some places around here it sounds like a bunch of sailors.

Wait a minute. ;)

I have developed a bad habit of using all sorts of vulgar words at work, usually when I am pouring over data or having a software issue. I do try to limit my vulgarity to my group and only on occasion will a few more 'minor' curse words (e.g. damn, hell - well minor for me at least) will slip out when talking to my manager(s).

Our IT department was foul-mouthed enough that we implemented a policy whereby each infraction costs the speaker 25 cents. The last time we totalled our money, we had $90, and went out to dinner. My contributions? $2.00, and no f-bombs from me. I hate it in the office, but since we work with a lot of the operators and engineers at the pulp mill here very closely, we sometimes get caught up in the language trap. There are 7 of us, and 1 guy probably put in at least $60 :D
