When is it a good idea to take the extended warranty?

How long do you expect to own the item? How expensive is the warranty? How much do you expect to spend in repairs over that time of ownership? If the warranty is cheaper than the expected repairs, buy the warranty. If not, take the price of the warranty and invest it.

I never get them. If they were worth the money to the buyer, then it wouldn't be worth it to sell them.

On big ticket items.

For example, laptops. If you get a $300 extended warranty and the LCD goes on the thing, you already have made up for paying the price of the warranty with it covering simply that.

You can't really dispute BigJ's point.

For big ticket items, I demand at least three years of warranty coverage, whether it be through the manufacturer, through the retailer, or simply from an extra free year from using my credit card, or any combination thereof. Anything cheaper and I still require at least a year of coverage.

Overall extended warranties do not pay for themselves. Might as well put that money on back or red at the casino.

I would never buy extended warranty on a car.....read the fineprint.

I bought it on my Plasma TV for $300. If I don't use the extended warranty I get that money back.

Anything electronic that costs more than $50 or so or anything that I've heard other people say they have problems with.

I wish I would've read this a long time ago... my LCD and battery went out on my laptop costing me over $400 when the warrenty was only $200

electronics.

I bought a Klipsch Promedia 5.1 from BB several years ago. The headphone port didn't work properly as it wasn't passing stereo, just mono sound. When I learned of this, I brought it back to bestbuy and all they had were Ultra 5.1 so I got a "Free" upgrade (~$30 for warantee).

anything from a company that's known to make products that don't last, like HP DVD drive etc. Also, I get them on things I use a lot, and might not take the best care of.

my PSP pooped out on me, and if I didn't have the BB extended warentee I'd have been screwed.

I think you either have to buy "all" the extended warranties.. or NONE. I choose to buy none and play the odds that nothing major will happen. Most warranties have so much fine print and fees, and shipping and handling, that they are even less attractive.
