is it essential to use silicon heat transfer paste? the installation guide on my mobo doesn't mention it, but i'm pretty sure its almost necessary to put in on. also, can i put it on just with my finger? will i be damaging my cpu if i accidently touch it when putting the silicon stuff on?

It's highly recommended but not essential. Using your finger is taboo as oils will get in contact and non conductive silicon will not damage the CPU.
