When I right click on a file my computer hangs for a few seconds.

I doubt it's the hard drive unless you are having data loss / corruption problems.

Maybe just defrag the hard drive.

Could also be the filesystem you are using. Is it NTFS or Fat32? I've had similar problems with FAT32 partitions that are greater than 32gb. Windows didn't seem to like it....

neither of you are telling us what motherboard/hard drive/chipset you have. That would help.

While it's not a definite answer - someone at work had a similar issue with context menus last week. When you right click on stuff there is a flurry of registry activity.

He figured it out in the end by using Sysinternal's Regmon tool. He then searched the output for '\\'. It turned out that a program had been registered in HKeyClassesRoot that referred to a UNC path (\\server\share\dir\app.exe), in this case the machine was unavailable. It may also choke for longer on paths to exe's that no longer exist. (e.g. something being deleted without being unregistered)

Take precautions of setting a system restore point before you muck w/ the registry (just in case). Figure out the Regmon filtering otherwise you can easily 'flood' your system with registry events. You'll need to watch for 'explorer.exe' process events only.

Worth a thought anyway.

I defragged and there's less than .05% of fragmented files.

Only thing extra would probably be winamp.
I'm not running any antivirus app.

Chipset: 850E
The motherboard I'm using is D850EMV2.

hi, didnt post h/w specs because i am pretty confident its not h/w related. (Kt266A Soyo Dragon+)

The 'problem' also only happens once in a while..just right now by clicking random files RMB doesn't produce the problem....and yes, it looks like it wants to 'connect' somewhere otherwise. I have RegMon...but since it happens so rarely might be hard to trace...

Just an idea... What are the power management settings for your HD? do you notice the HD spinning up immediately after you right click?

I only have one harddrive. How do I check if my harddrive is sleeping?
