When Fish Fight Back!!

The Illinois river is polluted with these things too. A few years back a woman on a jetski was actually killed when one of them jumped out of the water and hit her in the head. I don't remember if she drowned or if she died from head trauma. A 15 pound fish hitting your head at 20 mile per hour isn't cool.

They are excited by boat motors and that makes them jump. There are contests each year on the river where your goal is to try and get as many of them as you can to jump into your boat.

As far as their usefulness...you can't eat them. But I guess there's a company around here looking to harvest them for fish oil supplements. The rest gets turned into some kind of sloppy gruel that they give to the prisons for punishment. 😱

These carp are edible (smoked carp really isn't THAT bad) and there actually is a market for them. But the problem doesn't lie in harvesting and finding a use for them. If we could we'd just net them all and grind them into fertilizer.

The problem is they have no natural predators and are reproducing at such an alarming rate that no one has a sound option for stopping these things. None of the river's predatory fish will control them and they're taking food away from forage fish, dropping other species' populations. I'm dreading the day when I catch/snag one or worse get hit in the FACE by one boating out on the Mississippi up here.

EDIT: Never thought about bow hunting for them although lots of people shoot 'regular' carp around here when they spawn. I should plan a trip to a section of the Illinois river this summer 🙂

In 2003 a woman jet-skiing broke her nose and a vertebra colliding with a silver carp and nearly drowned.....

When I was a teen, we used to sneak up to overhangs over a river where carp congregated, and open up on them with shotguns. Carp massacres were great when we were stoned

Moose, That's f'ckin' sick. 😀

These things are a MAJOR problem. Once they get into a waterbody, they completely take it over. So every other fish will die off because the Asian Carp eat all the food.

There's a huge effort ongoing to keep them from getting into the Great Lakes.

Give them cigarettes...
