When does warranty start on a purchased item? (MS Power Cover for Surface)

I bought a brand new Microsoft Power Cover for my Surface Pro and it's completely shot from sitting on a shelf for so long. Microcenter has no more in stock, and I really want to keep it since it feels so much better than the regular keyboard.

Microsoft is telling me the warranty is over since 2015, and I have to pay a fee for support and possibly full price for a new keyboard.

When does the warranty to this thing start? It was a sealed, brand new item. Almost everyone who is buying one these days is finding out the Lithium batteries are too low to start the charge process.

I don't want to lose my money on this. I have my proof of purchase.

Date of purchase. Maybe you could hack an old cell phone battery in it's place.

If they've declared it an obsolete product, they probably have some BS language in their TOS that allows them to do so.

Nah - it's a really small case - but I can open it and charge the cells manually with a battery to bring it back to life. I just don't want to rip the cloth exterior.

I'll probably just visit a Microsoft store and bitch in person about it. I don't know if they are like Apple or not, but it's not too far from me.

If the Microsoft store doesn't help me, I'm going to rip it open and jump start the cells myself. Right now it's just too dead to start the charge...ugh

I bought some Nexus tablets from Walmart on closeout and on one of them the battery bulged when I tried to charge it for the first time. I called Asus and when I gave them the serial number they said it was out of warranty and without a copy of the receipt I was basically sol.
So it depends on the manufacturers tos. I believe there was a thread started by a mod in the storage forum saying that Seagate does the same thing. The warranty on their HDDs starts from the date of manufacture not the date of the end sale.

How is this not common knowledge that a warranty starts at time of purchase?

Anyone could make a claim that the bought the product 8 years ago but opened it 29 days ago so they should honor the 30 day warranty.

Unless I am missing something and the OP purchased this recently and they are saying the warranty is invalid. If that is the case then yeah, that's jacked up and just return it to the store you just bought it from.

Some premium credit cards offer return protection usually up to $500 per claim, did you purchase it with cash/check, debit or credit card? If plastic, was it Amex, MC, Visa or Discover?
