When do you replace your ink?

I have a question fro those of you that use inkjet printers. When do you replace your ink?

When the software or printer says its low or when the ink physically runs out or starts to fade on the paper?

When the printer shows the ink as almost gone. One of the reasons I went with the HP PhotoSmart 3210 (other than the descending numbers of easy remembering of the name!) was the fact that it has all the colors split apart. I hated throwing away cartridges with ink left in some of the compartments because one color was dead.

Not until I can actually see the print is degregated. The computer telling me to change it many times wastes a lot of ink. But now we have a color laser since they are so cheap.
