I decided not to put this in the storage subforum because I think this probably and usually comes down to a personal feeling judgement rather than anything more consistent and logical. I doubt anyone here waits for the drive to hit capacity 🙂
My current conundrum is the data drive in my computer is steadily filling up, a 4TB HDD. I imagine that once I've completely caught up with my current DVD/BR ripping then my storage needs are not going to accelerate as they have done in the last 4 years or so. The drive is currently sitting at about 850GB remaining. I replaced the previous 1TB drive when it was probably down to about 200GB remaining which suggests approximately 20% remaining is a conceivably sensible time, but it seems weird to think that going back a few drives in history and thinking to replace it when there's still so much space remaining seems crazy, but then I suppose it's like that joke about the amount of RAM the first spacecraft needed to go to the moon was something like 4KB, and now Chrome is sitting there using 2GB RAM to show a video of a kitten.
I'm probably fooling myself thinking that now that I've opened this whole DVD/BR ripping can of worms that my storage usage is ever going to slow down, as some day I'm probably going to start ripping my 4K collection to my PC (not just the raw data to some spare HDDs to test the discs actually work).
IIRC Windows will refuse to defrag a HDD when it reaches <15% capacity left, that's the only other factor I can think of including in this question. Do you lot have any kind of system to make the decision by?
